Slice of Life: The Transition From College to the Real World

So for today’s more personal topic…I’ll be graduating college soon! On one hand I’m excited to start a new chapter of my life with a bachelor’s degree in English and on the other hand, I’m terrified of what the future will hold.

I have a pretty good idea of what type of careers that I would like to go into, it’s just a matter of how to pursue them. I really would love to work with books (as I’ve probably already stated a million times in this blog) as well as with a publishing company. I’d also love to write a novel, which is a task I’ve been procrastinating on for a while, and I’m looking into teaching ESL too either here in the states or overseas.

I do plan to attend grad school, I’m just not sure when I’ll go or what specifically under English I’d like to study further. As soon as I graduate I would love to travel and study abroad. It’s always been my dream to study in Japan, since I started studying Japanese language and culture. But honestly I’d be happy with traveling to any of my favorite travel destinations.

Recently I read this book called “Getting From College to Career” by Lindsey Pollack…

Getting-from-College-to-Career

And it was incredibly helpful. It gave me the kick-start I need to help me transition from college to working world. I’d recommend this book to anyone about to graduate college, just graduated, or is in college now. The sooner you start preparing for after college life the better.

Some of the most helpful tips I took from the book…

  • stepping out of my comfort zone to network with people
  • building up a more professional social media presence
  • organizing job tips, apps, etc. into a single journal
  • researching the careers that are out there

Me+ the wisdom that came from the book=

Most importantly as a young twenty-something, I have constant anxiety of what the future will hold. So now in the wise words of Elsa I’ve learned to…

I take each day at a time. I try not to stress out, or worry about the things I can’t handle. Instead I focus on the things I’m great at and how I can use those assets to get a career in the profession I’ve always dreamed of working in.

Do you have any after college life tips? I would appreciate your great wisdom.

  1. My advice is cliche which is to follow your heart and passion. If it’s a career in publishing you want, go after it and don’t let anything get in your way. I’ll also add be flexible and be aware that the path to success can be totally different than the one you imagined. Be blessed!

  2. I think, every students must plan about their future before hand. What they want to become 5 years, 10 years, 20 years after. It’s quite helpful to determine what career you want to pursue if you visualize it yourself. Like if you want to become a lawyer, visualize yourself as a lawyer and claim it that someday you will be that person. 🙂

      1. You’re welcome! 🙂 Well, what I am doing is that I get a very nice pen and clean sheet of paper, and visualize. I write down every details that I want to achieve for short and long terms. And now it makes me feel good every time I look at my life plan. I know where I am going. It serves as a plan or draft of what I want my life to be. 🙂
