My Favorite Things: March Edition

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

Movies

Get Out

Synopsis: The film stars Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams, and follows a young interracial couple who visit the mysterious estate of the woman’s parents.

This film was absolutely phenomenal! It has all the elements of a horror movie while also having comedic elements and a commentary on race in today’s society. It was highly entertaining and the actors did a terrific job of executing their roles. There is way too many things I could say about this movie, but it wouldn’t fit in one post. As a black woman I could relate to so many of the topics touched on in this film, sometimes it was uncomfortable to hear, but it definitely needed to be said.

Long Way North

Synopsis: In 19th-century Saint Petersburg, a young girl from the Russian aristocracy named Sacha anguishes over the fate of her grandfather, a renowned scientist and Arctic explorer who has yet to return from an expedition to the North Pole. Against the wishes of her parents, Sacha flees home and launches a quest in search of her grandfather and his ship.

Long Way North is a film that I would recommend if you enjoy period or animated films. It’s gorgeously animated and is full of rich characters. From the beginning, viewers are drawn into Sacha’s story and her strong desire to go on an adventure. The adventure itself is daring as the ship’s crew runs into trouble. The only down side to this film is that the soundtrack was a bit lacking for me and the plot was a bit too simplistic at times.

Sing

Synopsis: In a city of humanoid animals, a hustling theater impresario’s attempt to save his theater with a singing competition becomes grander than he anticipates even as its finalists’ find that their lives will never be the same.

Sing was such a fun and entertaining film! It’s good for kids and adults alike, plus the catchy music will having you dancing throughout the entire movie. Though the plot is predictable the characters (and the music) is what makes this movie solid. Seeing all different types of animals come from different walks of life try their chance at stardom, while revealing their backgrounds and everyday struggles. Overall, it the movie leaves you with a feel-good movie and sends a strong message to its audience of never giving up on your dreams!

Beauty

Hask Shampoo & Conditioner

Hask is a fantastic collection of hair care products featuring exotic oils and other unique ingredients from around the world. The best part about their products is that it’s free of the bad stuff normally found in everyday shampoos such as  sulfates, parabens, drying alcohols. The Reparing Shampoo featured above is one of my favorite out of many that I use from this line. Though I do get my hair done at a salon from time to time, I find these products to be easy on my (more) natural hair when I do it at home. Their products are nourishing and smell great!

Music

Don’t You Worry Bout a Thing by Tori Kelly

One of my favorite tracks from the Sing soundtrack, is Tori Kelly’s cover of Don’t You Worry Bout a Thing (originally by Stevie Wonder). Her vocals really shine on this song, and its funky beat has me dancing. This is one of the best covers I’ve heard of one of my favorite Stevie songs.

Hobgoblin by CLC

CLC (Crytal Clear) is back with a 4Minute-esque style, which is no wonder since HyunA helped out with their concept this time. Their new album aims to show a more charismatic, hip-hop and chic image. I’ll admit I didn’t pay much attention to this group until this song, and now I wonder if I’ve been missing out. The MV is vivid and energetic, the music is upbeat, and the choreography is fun!

Almost Doesn’t Count by Brandy

Nothing like some good ol’ 90’s R&B. And nothing would be complete without Almost Doesn’t Count by Brandy. It’s such a good song! I love the lyrics, it’s guitar melody, mixed with Brandy’s soft vocals.

TV

Outlander Season 2

Synopsis: Claire Randall, a married World War II nurse who in 1945 finds herself transported back to the Scotland of 1743, where she encounters the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite risings. In season two, Claire and Jamie head to Paris try to prevent the Jacobite risings by subverting the funds that King Louis XV of France is likely to provide to the pretender Charles Stuart.

Again, another excellent adaptation of Outlander. Season Two was done very well, from the costume design to the cinematography (Scotland is such a beautiful country!). Since this season is based on Dragonfly in Amber, I found myself looking at the comparisons between the book and the show and I couldn’t find many differences between the two. I loved the new locations and the suspense surrounding the politics and the high society of the era. I cannot wait to see how Season Three will be!

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Synopsis: The 11-episode anime series centers on two young siblings, Mirai and Yūki, and single mother Mari who the two meet in the aftermath of a major earthquake hitting the Japanese capital, placed in the near future.

This is the first anime I have watched in a very, long time and I was not disappointed. Though the animation isn’t the strongest compared to other series I’ve seen the main focus in this series is the characters and their overall development. I felt that the creators of this show gave a very realistic depiction of what an earthquake of this magnitude would be like as well as the aftermath. The character development was strong and by the end of the show everyone has matured/changed from where they started at the beginning. I was sobbing by the end of this show, but I still enjoyed it.

  1. This month I finished watching “The Fall” which I just loved. I wasn’t really expecting much, but I’d been enjoying “Luther” and “Broadchurch” and it sounded good. Wow. So many other things are falling short now!

On your list, I’m intrigued by “Sing”. It seems just the thing to balance out some uber-serious books/movies in my stacks!

    1. I need to go back to watching “Luther”, I started season one and I never finished. I’ve heard of Broadchurch, but never watched it (but I might add it to my to-watch list. “Sing” is a fun movie, a good remedy to lift your spirits from heavy books.

      1. If you finished season one, I can see where the final episode of that one might have given you pause. Actually, now that I think about it, I think I took a break then too! (Wow *sigh*) But once I was into the second, I could hardly stop until the end. Now I spend too much time looking at the pic and wishing they’d announce more!

  2. I’ve been wanting to watch Long Way North because the cover looks stunning, but I was worried about the simplicity of the plot since animation is not really my go-to but I’ll give it a try anyways. And speaking of anime, have you seen Your Name yet? I had to watch it based on hype alone but I found it to be sadly lacking.

    1. I think with Long Way North, simplicity does it well. It’s not an overly complex film, but I feel like the focus was more character based. Your Name, is on my to watch list. I love films in that style, so I hope I like it.

  3. I heard that products with Argan oil is good for our hair. I’m trying again to transition to natural hair (but oh gosh, I’m soooo tempted to perm it).
I saw Get Out as well and liked it a lot cause it sparked so many interesting convos with friends and other peers. I was wowed by the movie, but I liked the social commentary and thought it was good.

    1. I feel ya. Right now, my hair relaxed, maybe I might go natural in the future, but for right now it’s just easier for me manage my hair this way. I’m glad you liked Get Out too! I think the social commentary is what made that movie so powerful.

      1. It is easier to manage when relaxed, which is why this going natural thing is a hard decision for me to make. I’m mostly driven by curiosity though. It’s been such a long time since my hair was natural.
