Movies

The Secret Life of Pets

The Secret Life of Pets follows a terrier named Max who enjoys a comfortable life in New York until his owner adopts another dog named Duke. During their walk outside, they encounter a group of ferocious alley cats and wind up in a truck that’s bound for the pound. Luckily, they are saved by a rebel bunny named Snowball who in exchange, demands that Max and Duke join his gang of abandoned pets on a mission against the humans who’ve done them wrong.

I love pets and animated movies, so I couldn’t resist going to the theaters to see this movie! It was such a cute film and it was funnier than I expected it to be. Though the plot was simple, I think the lovable characters are what makes this movie so enjoyable.

Central Intelligence

central intelligence

Central Intelligence is action/comedy film that stars Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. Bullied as a teen for being overweight, Bob Stone (Johnson) shows up to his high school reunion looking new and improved. While there he finds Calvin Joyner (Hart), an accountant who misses his glory days as a popular athlete. Stone works as lethal CIA agent who needs Calvin’s number skills to help him save the compromised U.S. spy satellite system.

This film was pretty funny as well. It’s not Kevin Hart’s best film out of the ones he’s done recently, but I still recommend watching this film if you need a good laugh. The chemistry between Hart and Johnson is what makes this movie so good and the action scenes definitely leave viewers entertained!

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates

Mike and Dave Stangle (played by Zac Efron & Adam DeVine) are young, fun-loving brothers who tend to get out of control at family gatherings. When their sister Jeanie reveals her Hawaiian wedding plans, the family insists that they both bring respectable dates. After placing an ad on Craigslist, the siblings decide to pick Tatiana and Alice, two charming and seemingly normal waitresses until they arrive on the island and show their party animal sides.

I got advance screenings to see this movie before it was released to the public and was curious to see how good this movie would be. When I saw this film I was having a really bad day, and watching the movie pulled me out of my funk. Though it was a “stupid-funny” film, it had me laughing a lot. The scenarios were so ridiculous you couldn’t help but laugh.

Music

No Jam by Kisum

kisum

One of my new favorite artists in the Korean music scene is Kisum.  The female rapper got her start on the music competition shows Unpretty Rapstar and Show Me The Money.  Her music is a fusion of pop and hip-hop, and her songs are a lot of fun. She just released her first EP called Musik and one of my favorite songs off the EP is No Jam. The title is a play on the Korean word for “fun,” which sounds like “jam,” and it talks about going out and looking for a good time.

Soy Mujer by La India

la india

La India is a Grammy nominated Puerto Rican-American singer and songwriter of salsa and house music. I’ve been listening to this song for some months now and I love the music. My favorite things about this song are the brass sound and the salsa feel. It’s a great song to dance to!

Cake by the Ocean by DNCE

DNCE

Cake by the Ocean is such a fun summer song. It’s a great dance track and I like it’s upbeat sound. I had no idea Joe Jonas singing this song until I saw the MV. He sounds so different from his Jonas Brothers days of music. Though it’s been on repeat on all the top 40 stations, I still can’t get enough of this song.

TV

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

unbreakable kimmy schmidt

Recently, I’ve been binge watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season 2. This show follows 29-year-old Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) as she adjusts to life in New York City after her rescue from a doomsday cult in Indiana where she and three other women were held by Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm) for 15 years.

The second season is still as funny as the first, but it is a bit deeper than season one as starts to tackle Kimmy’s issues of repressing all of the bad stuff that occurred in the bunker. There is also more character development as we get to explore more back story of the other main characters past as well as their current lives. I’m two episodes away from finishing season two and I’m already excited about watching season three!

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

miss fisher's murder mysteries

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries is an Australian TV show based on author Kerry Greenwood’s novels. It follows the personal and professional life of Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis), a glamorous private detective in 1920s Melbourne.

If you like period dramas/mystery shows this is definitely up your alley! I took a break from this show and now I’m back to watching it on a more regular basis. I feel that season two is a bit stronger than the first season as viewers are now a bit more acquainted with all of the main characters. Plus, the mysteries just keep getting even better.

Star Trek

StarTrekFEATURE

I’ve also recently delved (become obsessed with) into the world of Star Trek. I’ve always been a huge fan of Sci-fi, so I don’t know why it too me so long to start watching this show. Though some of the effects are a bit cheesy and dated, I really enjoy all of the adventures that the USS Enterprise goes on. My favorite character is a tie between Spock and Uhura.

  1. Ohmygoodness I’ve been obsessed with Star Trek this month too especially with the third movie coming out. Have you seen it yet? I actually think I might like STar Trek more than STar Wars LOL

  2. I loved Secret Life of Pets so much! Probably one of my favorites of the summer! And you know how I feel about Kimmy Schmidt already. I remember listening to La India a lot when I was in high school too.
