Today’s Topic: Seven Deadly Sins of Reading

Found on: The Streetlight Reader

Greed

What is your most expensive book? What is least expensive?

My most expensive book….I honestly can’t think of one book that I spent a ton of money on. I can tell you I have spent about $50 or $60 in a book shopping spree (that’s the minimum). I can’t think of the most expensive book I bought, but I can guess it was a hardback around $25. As for the least expensive book, probably around under $1. I love to go bargain book shopping, so I buy cheap books all the time.

Wrath

Which author do you have a love-hate relationship with?

Probably, Stephanie Meyer. I read the “Twilight” series when it first came out. It will always be my guilty pleasure read. It’s full of things I hate in books: angsty teenagers, insta love, confusing plot lines, and sparkly vampires. But at the same time I fell in love with everything that’s bad about it.

Gluttony

What book have you deliciously devoured over and over with no shame whatsoever?

Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. (Seriously, why I haven’t I written a full length post on this yet?) Love the characters, storyline, and writing. I can’t wait for the movie to come out!

Sloth

What book have you neglected to read due to laziness?

Hmmm…mostly classic literature. It’s stuff I want to read, but I just keep pushing it farther back in my TBR pile. To name a couple: “Farenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury and “A Clockwork Orange” by Anthony Burgess.

Pride

What book do you most talk about in order to sound like a very intellectual reader?

ALL THE CLASSICS!!!ย  I don’t know why I always talk about books like “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald and “Brave New World” by Aldous Huxley. My inner English literature nerd comes out, lol!

Lust

What attributes do you find most attractive in male or female characters?

Women:

  • Strong and confident
  • Got her life together
  • Fights for her beliefs
  • Being herself
  • Not afraid to stand out in a crowd
  • Is a book reader
  • Witty

Men:

  • Romantic and sweet
  • Handsome (of course!) and not just physical features but personality wise too
  • Funny
  • Strong and confident
  • Speaks his mind
  • Is a book reader

Envy

What books would you most like to receive as a gift?

ALL THE BOOKS! ๐Ÿ˜€

  • A cool graphic novel series (I love comics!)
  • The Fault in Our Stars – John Green
  • Burial Rites – Hannah Kent
  • Eleanor and Park –ย Rainbow Rowell

I could name tons more, but the list would be too long.

  1. If you get all the books, you will need all the bookshelves too! (That’s on my christmas list).

Not counting exorbitantly priced textbooks, I don’t think I’ve purchased any expensive books either. The closest probably is the 12 volume History of Middle Earth, which probably goes not only under the greedy indulgence category, but probably also qualifies as gluttony! My shameless inner Tolkien geek needs to be fed.

Female characters: need to pass the Bechdel test. Male characters: need to relate to the female characters as if they pass the Bechdel test. I find I often like the female characters in science fiction for this (see David Weber’s Honor Harrington series, which goes as far as characters sometimes using “she” and “her” when they may not know the sex of the person they are discussing, instead of always assuming “he” and “him”).

    1. Haha. ALL THE BOOKSHELVES! It is always good to feed your inner Tolken geek, I think all book nerd need some type of hunger satisfied, lol.
I also think it’s interesting that that Weber’s using “she” and “her” when discussing the sex of the person.

  2. I’m happy to discover another comic lover! Do you follow any character arcs in particular? I.e Batman, Superman, Daredevil etc. Brave New World is on my list of books to read as well! Have you read Nineteen Eighty-Four? I’m reading that one right now, but I want to read all the three big dystopian novels. Also yay for another Classics reader! I love reading classics, although I haven’t read any this year which is kind of disappointing. I love love The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. It’s one of my favourites. I have to go back and read The Great Gatsby since I read it in Grade 11 and I don’t think I quite appreciated/understood it back then. Did you like the movie?

I love all your answers :).

    1. Thanks! I haven’t read many comics lately because I’m so busy, but one of my favorite series is “The Runaways” (Marvel). The last series that I read was “The Good Neighbors” by Holly Black. I love Iron Man ๐Ÿ™‚ Never read 1984, but I heard it’s good. I have not see either of “The Great Gatsby” movies, but I hope to watch them soon!
