1. The Little Mermaid – A character that is out of their element, a “Fish out of  Water”.

nowhere but here

Emily from No-where But Here by Kate McGarry. She meets her father’s side of the family for the first time and she’s surrounded by his motorcycle club which screams danger (to her). Not only is she far away from home, but being in this new place with family who she doesn’t really know is hard for her at first. She makes judgements about everyone around her, but slowly she learns to let down her walls and let others in.

2. Cinderella – A character that goes through a major transformation.

mortal heart

Annith from the His Fair Assassins trilogy by Robin LaFevre. She starts off in the series as this quiet young woman who follows the rules. By the end of the trilogy she becomes stronger in her physical fighting skills and overall is more confident and outspoken about what she’s passionate about.

3. Snow White – A book with an eclectic cast of characters.

the color purple

The Color Purple by Alice Walker. The book has a wide cast of characters with varying personalities that add color and depth to the story.

4. Sleeping Beauty – A book that put you to sleep.

fallen

Fallen by Lauren Kate. A novel that started out really strong and ended badly. The main character was irritating and she kept repeatedly throwing herself into unnecessary dangerous situations though she was warned not to.

5. The Lion King – A character that had something traumatic happen to them in their childhood.

Learning Not to Drown

Clare from Learning Not To Drown by Anna Shinoda. Her brother goes to prison when she’s younger and it deeply affects her on top of all her other drama going on in her family. She tries to find ways to cope with it and because it always weighs on her mind, a “skeleton” is always hanging over her shoulder.

6. Beauty and the Beast – A beast of a book (a big book) that you were intimidated by, but found the story to be beautiful.

Outlander

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. It’s one of the biggest books I’ve ever tackled. I thought I would be intimated by the large size of the book, but its a smooth read with fascinating history, great characters, and a well-written story.

7. Aladdin – A character that get’s their wish granted, for better or for worse.

To All The Boys I've Ever Loved

Laure Jean from All The Boys I’ve Ever Loved by Jenny HanThough she uses her love letters as a way to get her feelings onto paper, she still wishes that the boys she had crushes know how she felt at that time. And when her letters are sent out publicly and are read by those very boys it causes a little chaos and teaches her about “real” love.

8. Mulan – A character that pretends to be something or someone they are not.

i'll give you the sun

Noah from I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson. After something traumatic happens to Noah and Jude (trying not to spoil the book for those of you who haven’t read it), Noah becomes a completely different person. Instead of drawing and creating art, which he has a strong passion for, he throws himself into sports and transforms himself into a “jock” persona.

9. Toy Story – A book with characters you wish would come to life.

undead and unwed

The main cast from the Undead and Unwed series by Mary Janice Davidson. Betsy, the vampire queen, absolutely cracks me up because of her colorful personality and the fact that she’s a non-traditional vampire. Paired with her bestie Jessica, husband Sinclair, friend Marc, and the many other characters in the series they would make a lively crew.

10. Disney Descendants – Your favorite villain or morally ambiguous character.

The-Knife-of-Never-Letting-Go

The Mayor from the Chaos Walking trilogy. He’s so evil and corrupt that you absolutely hate the things he does to people and the town. Though he’s a bad guy, I like that he is a villain that is well-written with some depth.

  1. I love your description of No-where But Here, it sounds wonderful! I think I would be judge-y in that situation too, it would be hard not to when you have such stereotypes of certain groups.

Fallen by Lauren Kate was an atrocious book, I’m so glad I decided not to continue with that series.

Thanks for the link back. 🙂
