What I’m Listening To…Girl Power!

Hello readers! I love listening to music of all genres on a daily basis. I can’t go a day without popping on some headphones and listening to some upbeat tunes while I dance around my room or relax from a long day by listening to calming songs. In my segment “What I’m Listening To” I share some of my favorite song picks with you in a mini-playlist consisting of five tracks.

Since March is Women’s History Month I’d thought I’d continue the celebration by making of playlist of music’s leading ladies. To see my reading recommendation list for this year click here. I obviously couldn’t fit all my favorites into one playlist I’ll be doing another list for retro/classic girl groups (ex.The Supremes), and favorite female soloists (modern and classic lists) so keep your eyes peeled for those in the future.

1) Waterfalls by TLC

One of the best and legendary R&B girl groups of the 90s was TLC. T-Boz, Left Eye, and Chilli had an iconic style and sound no other group could mimic. Having sold over 65 million records worldwide, TLC is the best-selling American girl group of all time, have scored ten top-ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100, and more. Waterfalls is a sad, but powerful song due to its socially conscious lyrics. It’s one of my personal TLC favorites.

2) Free Your Mind by En Vogue

En Vogue is an American R&B/Pop vocal group whose original line–up consisted of Terry Ellis, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, and Maxine Jones. En Vogue has sold more than 20 million records worldwide to date. On top of that the group has won seven MTV Video Music Awards, three Soul Train Awards, two American Music Awards, and received seven Grammy nominations. What strikes me about this group is their compelling harmonization in this song among others. Each member brings their own flavor to the music. Free Your Mind is a an exciting fusion of rock and pop which lyrics talks about anti-prejudice.

3) Survivor by Destiny’s Child

No girl group list would be complete without Destiny’s Child. Kelly, Michelle and Beyonce rock it out on a desert island in this iconic music video for their song Survivorr. This dance track is probably my top favorite song from this group. I love the song’s positive lyrics about getting motivated, and moving on, and become a stronger person. Destiny’s Child has sold more than 60 million records worldwide to date and Billboard magazine ranks the group as one of the greatest musical trios of all time.

4) Move by Little Mix

One of the newer girl groups that has impressed me with their variety of songs and talented vocals (especially their harmonization) is Little Mix. The British girl group consists of members Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, and Jesy Nelson. They were formed exclusively for the eighth season of The X Factor in 2011 and became the first, and so far, only group to win the competition. as of 2016, Little Mix are the only girl group from the UK to have three albums peak within the top 15 of the US Billboard 200. Move is such a upbeat song and I find myself listening to it anytime I feel like dancing or working out.

5) Wannabe by Spice Girls

And last, but not least one of the most iconic pop songs of my 90s childhood by the popular group, Spice Girls.  The group consists of Melanie Brown (“Scary Spice”), Melanie Chisholm (“Sporty Spice”), Emma Bunton (“Baby Spice”), Geri Halliwell (“Ginger Spice”), and Victoria Beckham (“Posh Spice”). I was obsessed with this group so much back in the day that I even had a Spice Girls bike as a kid. I love their individual personalities and looks that gave them their unique flair. The group has sold over 80 million records worldwide, making them the best-selling female group of all time and one of the best-selling pop groups of all time.

I hope you enjoyed this playlist! Who are your favorite (more) modern girl groups and which songs do you like the most? Comment below!

  1. I absolutely love music and I also listen day-to-day! I’ve got to say it’s mostly male singers when I think about it, though some girls I love are Sara Bareilles and Lisa Mitchell.

  2. En Vogue! It’s been a while since I listened to one of their songs. I loved TLC back in the day. It was them and Aaliyah on replay the whole time.
