Vampire Academy Movie Review

So I just saw the Vampire Academy movie and being an avid fan of the series I decided to share my thoughts on the movie. So without further ado here is my review!

Casting:

I really liked the casting for the characters. For the most part the actors/actresses fit the characters descriptions pretty well. Of course, Dimitri wasn’t as quite what I pictured him on-screen as he was when I read the book, but for the most part he was a pretty attractive guy 🙂

Acting:

Acting was fantastic in this movie! The actors/actresses fit portrayed the characters perfectly and kept true to the book. Props to Zoey Deutch for doing a great job of pulling of a sassy, sarcastic, funny, and kick-ass Rose. I really loved that they kept her character intact.

Film Techniques/Special Effects:

Lots of great action scenes! The fight and dhampir training, as well as Rose and Dimitri’s spar scenes turned out really well! Also lots of cool CGI effects with Christian’s fire magic as well as showing off the Moroi’s various powers.

Adaptation of Book into Movie Form:

I think the director did a good job of balancing the serious drama, fight scenes, and character relationships from the book. It has been a long time since I read “Vampire Academy”, since I did read it way back when the first book was initially released. I think incorporating a book into a movie can be a tricky job since you’re trying to create an adaptation that appeases the fans, but also appeals to the masses. Now, I know every scene from the book couldn’t fit into the movie, but if they were cut, I couldn’t see a significant gap in the storyline. With the cutting of these scenes, however, it allowed the addition for new  material.

Things I Really Liked:

I really liked how the brought the psi-hounds to life with amazing CGI magic! (Honestly I forgot they were even mentioned in the books, since it’s been such a long time since I read it).

Another thing I liked was the way they introduced information to people who haven’t previously read the books. Sometimes these background explanations can be lengthy and overwhelming, but the information in the film was portrayed in a way that easy to follow and was understandable.

Things I Didn’t Like:

There was honestly nothing that I didn’t like about the movie. The only thing I felt that could be improved upon was Danila Kozlovsky’s (Dimitri) speaking. Sometimes it was difficult t understand him when he was speaking. I know he has a thick accent, but I felt he needed be clearer in pronunciation.  Other than that his acting was great!

Overall Thoughts:

I honestly felt this movie was one of the better book movie adaptations compared to other recent book movie releases. The story was easy to follow for newbies to the storyline, there was lots of action and drama, and acting was so good! (And I’m not just saying this because it’s one of my top favorite series either).

Go to your local theatre and check out Vampire Academy! I give it 5 out of 5 stars 🙂
