Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Best Books Of 2016

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke And The Bookish. For more info on how to participate in this weekly post or future topics click here.

Gahh! I can’t believe we’re practically at the end of 2016 already! But honestly, I’m kind of glad to see this year go and am ready for a fresh start in 2017. Plus there are lots of awesome new debuts coming out year! *squeals with joy*

As always, with top 10 lists, it’s super hard to narrow the choices. I’ve read a lot of great books this year, and some of my top favorites still didn’t make this list. I spend most of the year catching up on 2015 reads, so this list is solely based off the books I read in 2016 (rather than published in 2016). Let’s begin!

the heart goes last

The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood

I’ve read tons of dystopian fiction novels over the past few years, but nothing has compared to The Heart Goes Last. I had heard so many great things about Atwood’s stories and now I see what I’ve been missing out on all these years! It was thrilling and thought-provoking at the same time!

labryinth lost

Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Cordova

Besides the fact the cover art on this book is absolutely gorgeous, it’s story is equally beautiful as well. The fusion of the “coming of age” story line with the magical elements of Los Lagos is what makes this story so appealing to its readers. The first book in the Brooklyn Brujas series was amazing and I can’t wait for the second installment!

The Girl From Everywhere

The Girl From Everywhere by Heidi Heilig

I’ve raved about this book way too many times to count this year on this blog. All that you need to know is that there is adventure, time-travel, and pirates in this story and if that doesn’t grab you attention I don’t know what will. *tries to patiently wait for book two to be released next year*

to all the boys I've ever loved

P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han

2016 has been the year that I’m staring to fall in love with contemporary fiction, and more specifically YA contemporary. This book is fun and easygoing while also managing to amp up the story from the first novel. I know this might not happen, but I’m crossing my fingers that Han will write spin-off novels for the other Song sisters.

walk on earth a stranger

Walk on Earth A Stranger by Rae Carson

While the fantasy aspects of this book was kind of meh, I was definitely on-board with the historical fiction part of the story. I haven’t read too many books dealing with the “Gold Rush” era of 1800s American history so I ended up learning quite a bit from reading this book. I hope to read even more“journey” style novels in 2017!

the steep and thorny way

The Steep & Thorny Way by Cat Winters

The Steep & Thorny Way was a one of a few retelling stories (another style/genre type? that I’m becoming more invested in) that I read in 2016. I loved the mash-up of Hamlet and the Prohibition era in this book. Though the story was a bit slow-moving at the start and the character development wasn’t the strongest, I still highly recommend this book.

the-masked-truth

The Masked Truth by Kelley Armstrong

If I had to pick the best thriller of 2016, The Masked Truth takes the case. It’s a scary and fast-paced page turner novel that asks readers the question “What would you do?” I also appreciated that the book is more of a psychological thriller and how the author explores the topic of mental illness.

gabi-a-girl-in-pieces

Gabi, A Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero

Hand down the best “coming of age” novel I read all year. Gabi is honest, hilarious, witty, and so damn real. She is relatable to so many readers in the sense that she struggles with trying to find her place in life. The writing is fantastic and the story is beautiful.

julia-vanishes

Julia Vanishes by Catherine Egan

This book had me hooked with espionage/fantasy themes that were interwoven into the story. The main character, Julia who has supernatural powers of invisibility and on top of that story gives off a Wolfman/Van Helsing/Jack the Ripper vibe too!

rat-queens-vol-01

Rat Queens Vol.1: Sass & Sorcery by by Kurtis J. Wiebe (Writer), Roc Upchurch (Artist)

Four awesome heroine who are humorous, sassy, brash, and they kick butt?! Rat Queens is my new favorite comic series and I love the artwork style and all of the fantasy elements in the story too! There is plenty of action so you’ll never get bored with the story.

  1. Did you hear about the new To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before novel that’s coming out next year (May 2, 2017)? Its called Always and Forever, Lara Jean, and I am so excited to read it! I love that series and I am so glad she decided to write another novel about Lara Jean (and I also am hoping she writes a spin off series).

  2. Rat Queens is the best: I love them. That one is a Kelley Armstrong that I haven’t read yet, but I’m looking forward to it. I quite like her series about a female assassin (which begins with Exit Strategy); I only have one left in the trilogy and I keep “saving” it. One of my faves from 2016 was Leslie Marmon Silko’s Gardens in the Dunes (quiet, slow-building, haunting); I hope to read some of her others (including the better-known, shorter Ceremony) this year!
