Slice of Life: Summer 2019 Wrap-up

Summer has sadly come to an end! While I’m sad to see the season go, I’m highly anticipating enjoying the autumn season. This summer was very hectic and I was so busy all the time. This summer was also pretty rough since I lost two family members, one of which I was extremely close to. Greiving is never easy, but I’m doing my best to take it one day at a time.

I wanted to go on vacation, but couldn’t due to time and money so I set out to discover some new places around town. It always fun to discover places within your hometown/state so here are some highlights of places I visited this summer. It’s given me a deeper appreciation for where I grew up and all the things it has to offer.

Star Trek: Exploring New Worlds – The Henry Ford

I got to travel to the Henry Ford Museum (one of my favorites) to see a limited time exhibit based on Star Trek. I am a huge fan of Star Trek, my favorite series is the original series, so I was excited to see the this exhibit. It was so amazing to see the original costumes up close, view all of the props used on set, and even learn more about the creation of the show from storyboard writers. The had so many life size figures of the ships used on the show and you even got to do a video experience mimicking the Star Trek teleporter.

Daebak Korean BBQ

I’ve had Korean BBQ before, but going to a restaurant where you actually get to grill on the table was a whole new experience. I went with a group of friends and we ordered lots of beef, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), kimchi stew, egg soup, and rice cakes. I got to try a lot of new Korean foods and I loved the shared experience of the family style dining. I think I’m finally mastering how to use chopsticks.

Dequindre Cut

The Dequindre Cut Greenway is an urban recreational in Downtown Detroit that is two-miles long. Formerly a Grand Trunk Railroad line, it’s well-known for its examples of urban artwork and graffiti lining the paved pathway. I’ve been meaning to go here for years and I finally biked part of the trail. It was a hot day, but I enjoyed being outdoors and taking pictures of nature and the colorful graffiti art that surrounded me. I can’t wait to go back soon!

Anastasia

As you all know, if you’ve been following the blog for a long time, that I adore musicals. I wanted to see this musical since I enjoyed the animated film as a kid. Personally I felt there were too many songs packed together with not much dialogue. Ironic since it’s a musical, right? I enjoyed the second act more than the the first act. I loved the gorgeous costumes and the new songs written for the musical. I also thought the stage design was unique.

Urban Ramen

I am always on a quest to find all sort of new and exciting ramen shops to visit. Urban Ramen’s menu is very simple compared to other ramen restaurants. They have 3 types of ramen to choose from. I tried the Chicken Paitan Ramen which was very hearty! The only thing I didn’t like was the dried burdock.

Tigers Game

Though I’m not the biggest baseball fan, I actually enjoy watching games in person rather than on TV. I like relaxing in Comerica Park and enjoying the sights and sound while I watch the game. They won both times I went to the game this summer and I actually got lower section seats for the first time, which was pretty exciting!

Detroit Festival of Books

One of the many festivals I went to this summer was the Detroit Festival of Books which is held in Eastern Market. It’s the second time I went to this festival and there were even more book vendors than before. I got to discover new local bookshops and even picked a couple of new books too. It was a great day to be outdoors and I loved seeing how enthusiastic readers of all ages were over books.

Le Macaron Detroit

I spent the day in Hamtramack which was a lot of fun since I hadn’t visited as a kid. It’s got a bakery that is famous for its paczki and on Paczki Day lines are wrapped outside the door. Besides picking up cool vintage items from a nearby thrift shop one of the day’s highlights was visiting this cute macaron shop! It had the cutest decor and their macarons were so delicious. I practically bought one of each flavor.

What were some of your highlights from this summer? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Sending my condolences. I’m sorry to hear that you lost people close to you this summer.

Still, it seems that you visited some great spots. I really liked the street art at Dequindre Cut Greenway.

  2. What a lovely post! It sounds like you had an amazing summer and that you visited so many spectacular places! That book festival sounds so incredible, and I’m glad that you enjoyed the Anastasia show! I’m hoping to see that one in a month or two when it rolls over to the Hollywood Pantages theater! Those macarons look so delicious, and the artwork at Dequindre Cut is beautiful in the photos you took! <3

  3. Oh, sweetie, I’m so so sorry that you’ve lost family members — that is so hard, and I’ll keep you in my thoughts.

Summer down South is neverending; I have reached the point in the year at which I stop believing in fall. Is fall even a thing? We’ll never know.

I’m very interested in your thoughts on Anastasia! I have been so curious about that musical, because I love the animated movie, but at the same time I’m not super sure that every single animated movie needs to be a stage musical? It sounds like this one may have been one of the ones that didn’t need to happen.

    1. Thank you for your kind words Jenny! It’s still pretty warm here, but Fall starting to come here. I love the season, but it’s way too short and our winters seem never-ending. I think your right about animated or every movie being translated into a musical. It was good, but some parts of it I felt didn’t translate over to musical form. It felt like some parts were pure filler bits to fill up the time. But nevertheless, I still recommend watching the musical.
