Review:

The Lure of Wolves and Whispers is a solid debut that the reader will have no problem getting lost within its pages. Within this story, lies Maeve, the main character/heroine, who struggles to survive in a world of brutality, politics, and scheming royals. Each day is lived as her last and the people of Eireann are constantly on edge. When Maeve risks her own life to save her sister she is forced into a world where fighting equals winning. Using her mind and strength, she must outsmart her competitors and get to the bottom of the secrets before its too late.

While this novel is marketed as a Romantasy, it has much darker and grittier tone to it. Romance is a huge part of the plot, but I like that Connolly also focuses on crafting an captivating world that is mysterious and a misty isle that is more ominous than beautiful. It’s grim circumstances for most residents and also for the royals as well (as we discover beyond the palace walls). People’s desperation to hoard magic and resources pit them against each other giving the atmosphere of a heated pot that is just waiting to boil over. These aspects give the novel suspense, and leave the reader wanting more with each chapter.

The first installment in The Martyred Isle series gives readers just enough without spoiling all its secrets too soon. A lot happens within the 400+ page count and it felt fleshed out because of the novels size. While reading this I never felt elements were too rushed, and I appreciated the slow burn of things playing out on the pages. The story has some really intriguing characters and you aren’t sure who to trust which adds to the overall mystery the novel is shrouded in. As for the romance aspect was done well and I’m glad things weren’t too rushed.

This a strong start to a new series and the cliffhanger will definitely leave readers wanting more. I’m excited to see what happens in book two! I recommend this novel for those who love action-packed fantasy with romance and a lot of mysteries to solve.
