My Favorite Things: January & February Edition

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

Movies

Where Do We Go Now?

Synopsis: Set in a remote village where the church and the mosque stand side by side, WHERE DO WE GO NOW? follows the antics of the town’s women to keep their blowhard men from starting religious war. Women heartsick over sons, husbands and fathers lost to previous flare-ups unite to distract their men with clever ruses, from faking a miracle to hiring a troupe of Ukrainian dancers.

This is the second movie I have seen directed by Nadine Labaki (who also stars in the film) and I absolutely loved it. It was beautiful, comedic, and heartbreaking at the same time. I enjoyed the story line and I felt that the film’s strong message was incredibly timely to some of the stuff that is happening in today’s society. I also liked that this film is part musical, the songs were a wonderful addition to the cast of admirable women who fight so hard to keep peace in their town.

The LEGO Batman Movie

Synopsis: Bruce Wayne must not only deal with the criminals of Gotham City, but also the responsibility of raising a boy he adopted.

After the awesomeness that was The LEGO Movie, I couldn’t wait to see what this next installment in the LEGO series would bring. This film (though it’s not as strong as its predecessor) was funny and I liked its positive message surrounding family. The voice acting was solid and I my favorite besides Batman, had to be Robin. Though he’s super naive, he’s such a sweet kid. I think this movie was definitely aimed toward adults and possibly and older set of children (middle grade age?) due to all the inside jokes and pop culture references. But nonetheless it’s still a film you should go see!

Private Eye

….

Synopsis: The story takes place in occupied Korea at the start of the 20th century, where a young student in medicine discovers the murdered body of the son of a government official. Being scared of being accused, he decides to hire Hong Jin-ho (a detective) to help him find the murderer before the police accuse him of the murder.

Besides being interested in classic noir style murder mystery films, I also wanted to see this film because of the main lead Hwang Jung-min. I’ve seen him in a couple of Korean dramas and have enjoyed his work. This film was very entertaining overall! The characters felt well-developed (even those will an aura of mystery), the case was interesting, and it was action packed. If you like period films, I would recommend watching this movie.

Beauty

Innisfree Sheet Masks

As you all my know by now, I am a huge fan of sheet masks since I’ve talked about them in many previous “My Favorite Things” segments. My friend got me a set of these for my birthday and I love them. They are inexpensive (cheaper to buy them in a pack than individually) and they leave my face feeling silky smooth. This is the second brand of Korean sheet masks that I’ve tried and I hope to discover more. Send me some recs in the comment section.

The Little Book of Skin Care by Charlotte Cho

I recently read this book and I found it very helpful in giving basic skin care tips as well as recommending products that are good for different skin types. While I’ve already upped my skin care routine in the past couple of years, I picked up a lot of things to add to my daily skin care routine and which types of products are more geared to my skin type.

TV

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season One

Synopsis: A young woman abandons a choice job at a law firm and her life in New York in an attempt to find happiness in the unlikely locale of West Covina, California.

This show right here. I can’t believe I didn’t find out about until now. I love that the show focuses on a “fish out of water” story line and how the character tries to reinvent herself in a new place. On top of that it’s also a musical. In the first half of season one I was so surprised by the outbursts of songs, but by the latter half I couldn’t wait to see what clever tune they would think of next. Most of the appeal of the show for me is not only the variety of character and intertwining story line, but the quirky songs. From songs titled “Textmergency” to “I Have Friends” they always come up with the craziest songs. I can’t wait to watch Season Two.

Mischievous Kiss: Love In Tokyo

Synopsis: At a high school entrance ceremony, high school student Kotoko Aihara (Honoka Miki), who isn’t that smart, notices pretty boy Naoki Irie (Yuki Furukawa). She falls in love with him immediately. Kotoko initially doesn’t express her feelings to him, but finally has a chance to tell him how she feels. Unfortunately, Naoki turns Kotoko down. One day, Kotoko Aihara’s house is severely damaged by an earthquake. Until the house is rebuilt, Kotoko Aihara and her father decide to live with her father’s friend. When Kotoko Aihara moves to her new temporary house, she is surprised to learn that Naoki Irie lives there as well.

This is actually the fourth (including the anime version) live action adaptation I have seen of the famous manga Itazura Na Kiss (Mischievous Kiss). So far I like it and the actors take on this popular story is portrayed very well. Even though I haven’t seen the original 90s version of this drama, I like the new and refreshing style it’s using to attract new viewers and ones who have enjoyed the original version.

Music

I Wish by Stevie Wonder

One of my favorite songs Stevie’s Songs in the Key of Life album is I Wish. It’s got a funky bass line and a beat that will make you move. I saw in concert a couple of years ago and his live performance, by far, is one of the most phenomenal things I have ever experienced.

Down by Mariah Hill

Honestly, I don’t know too much about the artist, but rather I heard this song off one of those recent Apple commercials. It’s incredibly catchy and I like how the sound is a mixture of the electronic and hip-hop genres. Marian’s falsetto vocals add to this song and it’s so soothing and melodic.

Don’t Say No by Seohyun

Finally Girls Generation member, Seohyun, has her solo debut. I’ve always found her to be one of my favorite members of the k-pop group and I love her voice and her songwriting skills. The opening track Don’t Say No is an R&B and dance pop song featuring a “funky” piano rhythm that will have you dancing. The vocals are amazing and the choreography is sexy without going too over the top.

Games

Resident Evil 7

Let’s be clear. I don’t play horror games, but I watch plenty of people play them on YouTube (because I’ m a chicken and can’t handle it). I have played a bit of some of the older Resident Evil games and I appreciate how well done they are. The fact that you have limited ammo, have to solve puzzles, and run away/fight crazy monsters chasing you makes it so much fun to play. That being said I commend The Bowling Otter Show (one of my favorite gaming channels) for playing this in VR because this game is so intense and full of jump scares. I loved the play through and I hope Capcom continues to make excellent Resident Evil games.
