Galentine’s Day Movie Recommendations!

As you all might know Galentine’s Day, celebrated on February 13th, is just around the corner. It’s a unofficial holiday that spawned from an episode from the show Parks and Recreation and every year it seems to get bigger. It’s a day for “ladies celebrating ladies” so in honor of it, I’m sharing some of my favorite movies about female friendship! Enjoy these picks!

Pitch Perfect

Synopsis: Beca, a freshman at Barden University, is cajoled into joining The Bellas, her school’s all-girls singing group. Injecting some much needed energy into their repertoire, The Bellas take on their male rivals in a campus competition.

Acapella and catchy songs? What a perfect mix! One of the reasons I love this film so much is the excellent casting. The girls featured in the main cast not only have great vocal skills and harmony, but the chemistry between the actresses is solid. The acting is good, the music will make you dance, and it’s full of comedy.

Sunny

Synopsis: The film is about a middle-aged woman who tries to fulfill her friend’s dying wish of reuniting their group of high school friends. The film alternates between two timelines: the present day where the women are middle-aged, and the 1980s when they were in high school.

This film is one of my top favorite Korean movies of all time. It shows that even when friends grow apart for years they can still reunite with one another and pick up where they left off. Each girl’s personality brings so much to film and the cast as a whole keeps the viewers invested in their stories. I laughed, smiled, and cried during the entire film. It made me realize how precious time is.

Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Synopsis: Four best girlfriends hatch a plan to stay connected with one another as their lives start off in different directions: they pass around a pair of secondhand jeans that fits each of their bodies perfectly.

This film holds a special place in heart as well as the book it’s based off of. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants was one of my first YA reads ever. I loved the concept of four very different girls whose friendship is strengthened over a pair of jeans. It’s not about the jeans, but what it symbolizes and how it ties the four together. This is a great feel-good friendship movie!

Kamikaze Girls

Synopsis: Momoko, a strange and seemingly emotionless girl obsessed with 18th century France, befriends a Yanki biker and the two experience the ups and downs of their unusual lives in a rural Japanese town.

Kamikaze Girls is a great film about two very different girls make an unlikely pair. Momoko loves Lolita fashion while Ichigo is a biker girl who loves to pick fights. The film is a bit wacky and weird at times, it’s a very good adaptation of a manga. The films sometimes outlandish antics feel as if it’s straight out of an anime, but in a good way. It’s a solid film with a lot of heart.

Girls Trip

Synopsis: When four lifelong friends travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, and there’s enough dancing, drinking, brawling, and romancing to make the Big Easy blush.

The ultimate girls movie of 2017! It was such a feel-good film and you can’t help but be in a better mood after you watch this film. I felt like I got an authentic glimpse of the entertainment that New Orleans has to offer and it made me want to travel there.  It’s raunchy and loud, but the overall theme of sisterhood/friendship is what I loved the most about this movie. The four bond over drinks, food, and having a good time.

Bend It Like Beckham

Synopsis: The film follows the 18-year-old daughter of Punjabi Sikhs in London. She is infatuated with football but her parents have forbidden her to play because she is a girl. She joins a local women’s team, which makes its way to the top of the league.

This movie is a perfect combination of sports and friendship. I loved the concept of a girl fighting for her dream to play soccer (football) while also on a path of self-discovery.  Parminder Nagra & Keira Knightley make an epic duo as friends on and off the field. I liked the way their friendship grows over the course of the film. This film has a nice blend of romance, comedy, and action.
