My Favorite Things: June Edition

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

Movies

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2

Synopsis: The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage.

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2 was awesome! Though Baby Groot stole most of the show, I enjoyed the plot, action, and usual banter between members of the Guardian crew. The music was excellent as always, but it still doesn’t top the OST for the first film. While it was action-packed, I liked that the plot dove into more serious moments as father figures and family were reoccurring themes in this movie. I felt the character development was solid and I liked the further exploration of the main characters back stories. I can’t wait for the next installment!

Wonder Woman

Synopsis: Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained warrior. When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, she leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

Gal Gadot was fantastic!!! See proof in gif below…

I was so hyped up for this movie and I am so glad I wasn’t let down by ut. The acting was superb, the characters (good and bad) were entertaining, and I liked the smooth layout of Diana’s origin story and how she became “Wonder Woman”. I thought Patty Jenkins did a terrific job of directing this film and I appreciated that the movie wasn’t too heavy on the romance. If you haven’t seen this movie yet, I highly recommend it.

Busco Novio Para Mi Mujer

Synopsis: Fed up with his nagging and nitpicking wife Dana, Paco devises a plan to end his marriage: he hires professional womanizer/seducer “El Taiger” to whisk his wife off her feet.

This movie was really funny and even though it was a rom-com I liked how it discussed themes of marriage, relationships, and love. On top of that, it also sends a message about taking thins for granted. Granted both sides of the party are both guilty for their lack of communication, and it’s interesting to see whether the couple will be able to work it out. I thought the actors did a good job of portraying their characters too.

Music

If it’s Loving That You Want by Rihanna

One of my favorite albums by Rihanna is Music of The Sun. This debut album is a long way away compared to her look/sound now. All the songs on this album have a Reggae/Caribbean sound and feel. I love every song on this album and If it’s Loving That You Want is one of my favorite jobs.

Sailor Moon Moonlight Densetsu by SilverStrike

As I’ve been slowly getting back into watching anime on a regular basis, I’ve been visiting older shows that got me into the fandom/watched as a kid. Sailor Moon was magical for me and I always find myself singing the theme song all the time. This remix version of the theme song sounds amazing!

Handclap by Fitz and the Tantrums

I’ve heard this song originally when it came out, but for some reason I’ve had it on replay this month. Any grocery store, restaurant, I’ve been in recently has had this song playing so it must be a sign! The melody for the song is simple, but it’s got that peppy anthem sound that makes you wanna get up and dance.

TV

Good Morning Call

Synopsis: Nao rents her dream apartment, but things are not what they seem when she finds out she will be sharing it with high school heart-throb Uehara.

I’ve been starting to get back into J-Dramas again (please send me recs!) and next on my list is Good Morning Call. As of right at this moment I only have one episode left before finishing the first season. I’m not sure if Season Two has been confirmed, but I’d like to see more of this show. The show has its ups and downs for me since I’m not the biggest fan of high school dramas, but the acting is done well and I like the range of characters portrayed. The story is a bit predictable in some spots, but it’s still an overall entertaining show.

Broad City

Synopsis: Broad City follows two women throughout their daily lives in New York City, making the smallest and mundane events hysterical and disturbing to watch all at the same time.

This is a show I have been wanting to watch for a while, but it was also recommended by a co-worker as well. The show is filmed in a way similar to other shows on Comedy Central, but it’s Abby and Ilana’s friendship that makes the show shine. It’s hilarious, the two girls always get in the funniest/weirdest situation, and the chemistry between the two on-screen is evident. The humor is very raunchy which caught me off guard in the beginning, but after the first couple of episodes it didn’t bother me. I found this show to be relatable to its audience and I will definitely be checking out season two.

    1. Same here! When I was studying Japanese full-time I binged watched a ton of dramas on various sites. But now that I’m getting into J-dramas again it’s so hard to find sites to watch them on. Netflix is adding more K-dramas so I’m hoping they add more J-dramas too.

  1. “Wonder Woman” was my favourite from June too. I thought it was awesome!

In June, I finally made time to read Ernesto Quinonez’s Bodega Dreams, which I thought was great too. Set in Spanish Harlem, it’s really all about the narrator’s voice, and how he draws you into NYC and makes you see things from his perspective. I think it’s considered a modern classic, and I was tired of hearing how amazing it is, but now I understand why so many people count it as a favourite.

Hope you’re already finding lots of faves in July!
