My Favorite Things of 2017: TV Shows

In 2017 I watched A LOT of TV! Even though I’ve had many binge watching sessions throughout the year, I’m still playing catch up with a lot of newer releases as well as older shows. A lot of shows were re-watches for me  and plus I have a horrible habit of starting and not finishing shows. There are quite a bit of shows that I have discussed on this blog, but here are my top favorites for 2017!

American Horror Story: Roanoke

My Roanoke Nightmare, the story follows a married couple whose experiences are reenacted by actors. Shelby and Matt Miller  move from Los Angeles,to a house in North Carolina following a brutal assault. As soon as the couple settles into their new home, set on Roanoke Island, strange and paranormal occurrences begin to haunt them and Matt’s sister, Lee Harris.

This was probably my third favorite season out of all the AHS season. The plot was suspenseful and thrilling, and the constant aura of mystery kept me on edge. Props to the characters who lived in the house in that haunted because at the first sign of something spooky I would have been gone! Another reason I liked this season so much was because it was a show within in a show. It was something different, but it worked well!

My Only Love Song

Song Soo-Jung is a top star and she is very arrogant. She classifies people by how much money they have. Suddenly, she goes back in time to the Joseon era and meets On Dal. He will do anything to make money, but in fact he is generous to the weak and poor.

Such a cute K-drama! With each episode running at 30 minutes, it’s very binge worthy. I love time-travel dramas and this one had a great fusion of having a present day actress being thrown into the unfamiliar territory of the Joseon era. Soo-jung acts in historical dramas so she uses her skills to survive in the past. This show is very entertaining with it’s random dance scenes, witty humor, and its sweet romance. I’m hoping they will make a Season 2!

Frontier

The series follows Declan Harp (Jason Momoa), a part-Irish, part-Cree outlaw who is campaigning to breach the Hudson’s Bay Company’s monopoly on the fur trade in Canada.

So initially I was intrigued to watch this show only because of Jason Mamoa! He’s gorgeous! But then I saw it was a historical drama so I knew then I couldn’t pass it up. I’ve never seen a show focused on the fur trade and it was interesting to see the many sides of the trade and how much power these companies have. It’s a bit dark, gritty, and (very) violent at times but I enjoyed it so much. The story line is a bit jagged in the beginning, but smooth itself out. Season two is now available and I’ll be watching it soon.

Descendants of The Sun

A love story between Captain Yoo Shi Jin, Korean Special Forces, and Doctor Kang Mo Yeon, surgeon at Haesung Hospital. Together they face danger in a war-torn country.

Though this drama had a more character-based story line with a slower moving plot, I really enjoyed it. It was refreshing to watch since there really hasn’t been a K-drama like this. The cinematography is beautiful and I loved all of the water scenes (it was filmed in Greece). It’s categorized as a Military and Hospital drama. There is also a good balance of romance and action too!

Noragami: Aragoto

A minor god seeking to gain widespread worship teams up with a human girl he saved to gain fame, recognition and at least one shrine dedicated to him.

I was just as pleased with this season as much as the first one. We see the return of all of the lovable characters which make the show and the second season really delves into back stories while moving forward with the overall story arc. We learn Yato’s origin as a god and see how he is making small steps in order to become god that is loved by many. The relationship between him and Hiyori deepen as their friendship becomes stronger and Hiyori starts become more involved in the spirit world. Season Two was full of action and character development.

Over The Garden Wall

A miniseries that centers on two half-brothers who travel across a strange forest in order to find their way home, encountering odd and wonderful things on their journey.

I loved the animation style, plot, characters, and even the songs. What I enjoyed most about Over The Garden Wall is that it’s a clever animated series that reminded me of shows such as Gravity Falls. The story is layered with sub-plots, viewers have to decipher a mystery, and it has some deep metaphors as well. Ultimately, the show is just one big adventure and each episode brings new surprises.

D-Day

When a natural disaster strikes Seoul, a team of medical doctors and emergency personnel struggle to deal with its aftermath.

This Kdrama really pulled at my heartstrings! The two leading actors Kim Young-Kwang and Jung So-Min (2nd drama I’ve watched her in) did a fantastic job of portraying their characters along with the rest of the cast. The show mainly focuses on how people react after a natural disaster from (mostly) a medical standpoint since the majority of the show takes place in a hospital. It was thrilling and engrossing to see not only how people reacted to various situations, but the politics that occurred within the hospital too. One of the main things I appreciated about the show is that it wasn’t heavy on the romance.

Outlander Season 2

Claire Randall, a married World War II nurse who in 1945 finds herself transported back to the Scotland of 1743, where she encounters the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser and becomes embroiled in the Jacobite risings. In season two, Claire and Jamie head to Paris try to prevent the Jacobite risings by subverting the funds that King Louis XV of France is likely to provide to the pretender Charles Stuart.

Again, another excellent adaptation of Outlander. Season Two was done very well, from the costume design to the cinematography (Scotland is such a beautiful country!). Since this season is based on Dragonfly in Amber, I found myself looking at the comparisons between the book and the show and I couldn’t find many differences between the two. I loved the new locations and the suspense surrounding the politics and the high society of the era. I have Season 3 on my DVR so I need to binge watch it soon!

Good Morning Call

Nao rents her dream apartment, but things are not what they seem when she finds out she will be sharing it with high school heart-throb Uehara.

Another cute drama. The story line kind of reminds me of the other J-drama Mischievous Kiss, but it still shines on it’s own! Uehara is the quiet, arrogant type of guy that likes to be left alone and Nao is a bright, bubbly, naive girl. Though the two are polar opposites I like how their relationship slowly evolves from friendship, to crushes, and then love. I also liked Nao and her lively friends, they always had her back and gave some solid advice.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Seasons One & Two

A young woman abandons a choice job at a law firm and her life in New York in an attempt to find happiness in the unlikely locale of West Covina, California.

Woo hoo! I love this show. It’s a great musical comedy drama and I think the writing is excellent. Though the main character is a bit obsessive and extreme, I think that Rachel is relatable in many ways. Not only is it a show about being in love, but it’s also a showing about finding your way, which is something we can all relate too. I love that the cast of characters and all of the talented people that bring them to life! Season two ended on quite the cliffhanger, so fingers crossed that it will come to Netflix very soon.

  1. Ahhhhh, I’m so glad you enjoyed Descendants of the Sun. I was actually considering a rewatch this year. And I seriously need to watch Over the Garden Wall, I’ve heard amazing things!

    1. Yes I loved it and I still have the OST on repeat every once in a while. And yes you would love Over The Garden Wall, its very short but well worth the watch.

  2. Yayyyyyy I’m delighted that Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is on this list! I binge-watched the first two seasons this year, and I’m almost completely caught up on season three now as well, via the CW app. It’s one of my favorite shows, if not my very favorite show, on air right now. The third season has been tremendous, both in terms of plot and in terms of excellent music.

  3. Frontier! I keep forgetting to catch up on that. I’ve only seen the first episode so far and I wanted to return to see if I’d like it because of Jason.

    1. You should keep watching. Those first couple of episodes are rough, but then it gets so much better. I’m trying to resist the urge to binge watch season 2.

  4. Ooo, I enjoyed your thoughts on Frontier as that’s a topic I feel like I know very well through history studies and it would be intriguing to see this perspective on it, but I didn’t know anyone who was watching! It’s on my list now. I’ve just started watching “Offspring”, an Australian drama about two adult sisters, which has some comic elements which I really like (it’s kind of like “Fleabag” but less edgy). One of my all-time-faves for this year is “Master of None” (last year too)! I’m looking fwd to the third season!

    1. I still gotta watch Master of None Season 2. Maybe I’ll catch up over the holidays. I hope you like Frontier if you choose to watch it. Offspring sounds like a fun show, is it available through Netflix at all?

      1. All the seasons are available via the Canadian NF, which seems to be much the same (but not completely) as the US offerings. It’s interesting to compare it to “The Mindy Project” (which I also like), both single women working in health care and navigating challenging relationships.
