Synopsis:
During the Second World War, a Hampstead villa named Gibbin House was a refuge for artists and intellectuals fleeing the continent. But nearly five years later, this former beacon of hope has become a prison for the four men who remain exiled there. The mysterious arrival from Vienna of Anka Pietraru – a young woman unable to voice the unbearable secret of a mother’s sacrifice – will test the men’s perceptions of love and loss. And as Anka unearths old grievances within Gibbin House, its residents will be forced to decide if they have the strength to begin living again or if it is simply too late.
Review:
I really enjoyed reading “Gibbin House”. It was nice change of material from the typical books I read and it had an intriguing storyline. The novel, is a historical fiction story and takes events from the past and meshes with an interesting plot. It took me a while to understand some of the historical contexts I was reading about since I wasn’t very knowledgeable about the country and the time period. Doing a little side research cleared up my confusion immediately and I was able to get a better understanding of the background in order follow the plot.
Perla is a great writer. She creates this world with a cast of characters that have varying personalities, and puts hard work into detailing the people and scenery. It makes the reader feel that they are living in Gibbin House as well. The settings were so realistic and I liked that Perla uses this poetic literary language that you usually only find in the traditional classics. The plot is paced at slower rate, but it helps to give time to develop the characters and let them tell their own stories.
I think anyone who enjoys historical fiction and a powerful story of human relationships will love reading “Gibbin House”. Overall, “Gibbin House” gets a 4 out of 5 stars.
