“The Iron King” (The Iron Fey #1) by Julie Kagawa (2010)

Genre: Fantasy, YA

Book Length: 368 pages (hardcover edition)

Synopsis:

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she’s known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth – that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil, no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

Review:

Due to the amazing recent read of “Immortal Rules” by Julie Kagawa that dealt with vampires, I expected nothing less when reading about the world of faeries in “The Iron King” by Julie Kagawa. I have had my eye on this book for a long time and got the chance to finally read it! I felt myself wondering why haven’t I read this story sooner?!

Kagawa’s writing is flawless. She has a strong plot line, well-developed characters, and as you’re reading the book you are completely immersed in a completely different place and time. Meghan, our main protagonist, thinks her life is normal until she finds out she’s the daughter of a faery king and has to rescue her brother in an enchanted land. In her adventures she learns about the pleasantries as well as the dangers of a magical world while trying to find herself.

Reading about fairies in this book made think a little bit about Holly Black’s dark faery series. Both series are completely unlike, but it is with such intensity that Kagawa goes to create these great character relationships/tensions, the various types of mythical creatures that are used, and the fact that she puts so much detail into the various faery kingdoms to the point the reader can imagine them before their very eyes is what makes this novel so fantastic!

This is only book one in the series so I can’t wait to read what happens next!

Final Verdict:

Love, love, love Kagawa’s work! This is a great book for fans of fantasy and faery stories. 5 out of 5 stars!

  1. Love, love, love this book! The Iron Queen was my favourite in the series, though. Then the Iron Prince. Team Ash all the way! As much as I love Puck, Ash and Meghan are just meant to be 🙂
