Slice of Life: Summer 2021

Summer is sadly coming to an end! While I’m sad to see the season go, I’m highly anticipating enjoying the Autumn season. It’s been a difficult year this summer I was grateful to get outdoors and travel to some new places while still being able to social distance. Here are some highlights of summer 2021.

Vault of Midnight & Detroit Shipping Company

A few members of my local book club and I were able to make a fun day trip to Vault of Midnight and ate at Detroit Shipping Company. Shipping Company is a restaurant collective featuring five premium food-truck style eateries. We ate outdoors on their patio space and I ate some yummy dumplings. Vault of Midnight which I’ve gushed about many times is a amazing comic book store in Downtown Detroit. I spent too much money, but I enjoyed spending a day with the book club peeps and finding some new reads.

Dino Stroll

Anybody that knows me knows I am passionate about dinosaurs. When I heard the Dino stroll was coming to town I was elated. The event ours featuring nearly 100 life-like reptiles, dinosaurs, and more. The animatronics were life-size and high quality. It reminded me of the Jurassic Park section in Universal Studios Florida. It was a lot of fun!

Greenfield Village

I’ve talked about this museum several times on the blog, but I never get tired of visiting this place! Greenfield Village is an 80-plus acre outdoor living history museum with six historic districts. More exhibits were open since I went on a weekend and it wasn’t crowded at all making it easy to leisurely stroll around the park. I went on a few train rides, went for a spin on the historic carousel, and walked around taking in the sights and sounds.

Detroit Festival of Books

This annual event was scaled way down to size from prior years due to Covid but it was still a great book festival. This festival held at Eastern Market is dedicated to promoting the joy of reading and the rich culture surrounding it. The outdoor shed was filled with indie booksellers and authors galore. I found some great book deals!

Beyond Van Gogh

This is an interactive exhibit that had been trending a lot on social media. Being a fan of Van Gogh’s artwork I was glad I was able to buy tickets for it. The exhibit is an immersive presentation of Van Gogh’s artwork using cutting-edge projection technology. I learned more about Van Gogh’s background and even the inspiration for famous pieces of his art. After walking through slides of his history you get to stand/sit in a room that has a 35min presentation of his art displayed on a giant wall. It was a relaxing experience and the paintings were beautiful.

Free Comic Book Day

Free Comic Book Day is traditionally held the first Saturday in May each year but due to Covid, it was held in August. As always, a good a selection of comic to choose from. This year I visited three shops Comics & More, Liberty Comics, and Comix Corner. The staff is very friendly as always and I managed to also buy some anticipated reads that I had on TBR.

What were some of your highlights from this summer? Let me know in the comments! And as always you can follow me on my Instagram page to see my bookish adventures, life stuff, and current reads.

  1. Dang, you’re putting me to shame! You’ve done SO many cool things this summer! I have mostly stayed inside and sulked about the heat, but I did have a little vacation in Pittsburgh to see friends — it was so great to actually spend time with loved ones I haven’t seen in ages, a tiny respite from COVID exhaustion.

    1. The heat was so intense! I think I could have done more outdoor activities if the heat wasn’t so bad. I’m glad you got to go to Pittsburgh and visit friends. That must have been fun!
