My Favorite Things: March

My Favorite Things is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. I hope you enjoy these personal picks!

TV

Mr. Midnight: Beware the Monsters

A once-average teenager and his friends become paranormal investigators and document their adventures in an online blog under the pseudonym, Mr. Midnight.

This Netflix series is an adaptation of the popular Singaporean book series Mr. Midnight by James Lee. It gave me all the vibes of Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark episodes I used to watch growing up. Though aimed a YA age audience, I think this TV is a great watch for those that enjoy things that are spooky and stories about creatures that go bump in the night. I also learned a lot of new things about Singaporean culture too while watching it. It’s a great show with some fantastic special efffects and a crew of mystery-sleuthing friends that you’ll grow to love over the course of the series.

Movies

Planet of the Apes

Complex sociological themes run through this science-fiction classic about three astronauts marooned on a futuristic planet where apes rule and humans are slaves. The stunned trio discovers that these highly intellectual simians can both walk upright and talk. They have even established a class system and a political structure. The astronauts suddenly find themselves part of a devalued species, trapped and imprisoned by the apes.

This movie was mind-blowing not only because of the plot but the special effects used (they felt so realistic!). Apes is a movie I’ve had in my watchlist for years and now it’s become one of my Sci-Fi favorites of all time. Though it’s a older film, I think the message of it is still incredibly relevant to this day which is what makes it so powerful. From beginning to end I was hooked into the story and all of the actors helped to immerse the viewer into the film. It’s film I highly recommend!

Don’t Blame Karma

When her younger sister and high-school crush get engaged, Sara must find out whether her alleged bad luck is the real culprit behind her misfortunes.

This rom-com from Mexico is an over-the-top, but very lovable film is about second chances and fate. Sara, though she gets along with her sister, she feels like she pales in comparison to her in everything she does. You can clearly see this in the family’s wacky outbursts as they live together while Sara’s sister is preparing for her wedding. The humor in this mpvie is non-stop and I loved the heartfelt moments of two sisters trying to let go of the past and reconcile their differences.

Lulli

A brilliant but self-centered medical student seems incapable of listening to others — until an accident gives her the ability to hear people’s thoughts.

I’ve been trying to explore more media from countries that I don’t usually watch and I happened upon Lulli, a rom-com/slice-of-life film from Brazil. While stereotypical and formulaic in some of its plot at its core it’s a feel good movie about navigating life but also being a better listener (and overall better person). It’s goofy and outlandish, especially since the main character can read other people’s thoughts and goes to geat lengths to keep it a secret. This film put a smile on my face and made me laugh.

Think Local: A Parks and Recreation Retrospective

Parks and Recreation is one of my favorite shows and I love to re-watch it whenever I have down time. This video is a fun and introspective essay on the show’s legacy while breaking down the characters and some of the plot lines featured in the show’s run.

Ticketmaster Will Always Suck. Here’s Why.

With Ticketmaster being such a hot topic these days, this video was timely but also explained why we are dealing with the problems surrounding the website today. I just tried to buy tickets for a concert recently and couldn’t get tickets to a show because of a lottery system, in which most of those tickets were being resold minute being bought. It’s like why do I even try anymore?! This video is a good breakdown of the service and talks about the state of the music industry today.

Music

Friends Again by LVTHER, Claire Ridgely

This is fun and mellow pop song that I like to listen to in the background or when I’m cruising in my car. It’s catchy and the jazzy vocals match well with the electronic synths featured in the melody.

Money Can’t Buy by Charlie Taft

I discovered Charlie through SM Station’s YouTube channel and I’ve been following her music ever since. I love her R&B style vocals and the 90s sound essence in her tracks. This song feels like a throwback and it has a funky beat you can groove to.

All at Once by Whitney Houston

Every now an then I re-discover a song I love but haven’t listened to in such a long time. I get to experience the joys of the melody and lyrics. This song by Whitney is so soothing and shows off her vocal prowess as well. It’s a solid love song ballad.
