Top Ten Tuesday: Non-Fiction Reads!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week’s topic is a genre freebie! This week I choose 10 non-fiction reads that I would recommend to anyone and ones that you should most definitely add to your TBR! As always, it was hard to narrow this list down to ten books, but I tried my best!

Ikigai – This a small, interesting book is about finding your “ikigai” – identifying your purpose or passion and using this knowledge to achieve greater happiness in your life. I love how gorgeous the cover art is.

Black FortunesBlack Fortunes follows the narratives of America’s first black millionaires. The book focuses on six historical figures and how they rose to their status and used their power for social justice, movements, to help their communities grow, and how they helped people of color to thrive.

Welcome to the Writer’s Life – This book includes an in-depth exploration of all the elements of a writer’s life, from your writing practice to your reading practice, to your writing craft and the all-important and often-overlooked business of writing.

Am I There Yet?Am I There Yet? is a graphic memoir about navigating life and adulthood filled with an entertaining narrative and lots of illustrations. pictures are colorful, quirky drawing style that I like.

We Are Not Yet EqualWe Are Not Yet Equal is an insightful book about the history of civil rights with a deeper focus on law. It highlights moments such as the Great Migration, the case of Brown vs. Board, and other significant moments in civil rights/political history.

Well That Escalated Quickly – This memoir is raw and very honest as Ramsey describes her rise to YouTube fame and her backlash from those who don’t agree with her work. She talks very openly about her vulnerability to be vocal online and even how the toxicity of social media got to her like many others before.

Dead Feminists – I love typography and books about feminism, so if you enjoy those two things, you’ll enjoy this book! Each chapter focuses on three feminists and gives a bit of background about their life and legacy. I loved the whole idea of this poster series and it was nice to see them pay tribute to leading ladies, but also give back to the community.

Rad Women Worldwide – This book is an amazing compilation of powerful and influential women worldwide who have made great contributions to their communities and notable achievements in history. The book is a great way to learn more about and brush up on global feminist history.

This is What a Librarian Looks Like – This book reminds me of the library version of Humans of New York. Photo journal books absolutely fascinate me and that’s why I initially picked it up. It profiles a variety of librarians from all over and it was interesting to read why they chose that profession and what libraries mean to a community.

Unmentionable – This is a history about women in the Victorian era that covers a variety of topics such as hygiene, clothing, menstruation, marriage, and much more. Each chapter focuses one topic, as to not overwhelm the reader, and it explore it-depth. I loved the book’s casual tone and humor aspect that made it into an entertaining, rather than a dry history book.
