Operation: Organize Bookshelf 2015

With the start of every new year, I find myself making a pledge to be more organized and more frugal as well. Some days are better than others, because let’s face it, I’m only human and I’m allowed to make mistakes. Sometimes I organize my things (ex.my desk, dresser, book collections and then weeks or months later I find that same space I just cleaned all messed up once again.

At the beginning of 2015 I took it upon myself to re-organize my book collection. That meant starting from scratch; pulling every book off the shelf and then finding a way to re-sort them neatly unto the shelves. I thought this would be an easy task, but alas cleaning is never just one simple job. You can run into small obstacles along the way, but somehow you manage to figure it all out.

I’ve been on this “great book purge” kick since 2014, where I’ve been donating my books I won’t read, lost interest in, or are just kind of taking up space. I’m trying to be better at not buying new books all the time and actually sit down to read the ones I’ve got.

My first task was to empty the book shelves…

So…I own a lot of manga…

Then it was time to decide which books to give away. I actually ended up giving away, quite a bit.

Yay! Time for more shelf space!

After that, the daunting task of putting ALL of my books back on one shelf… (Which took forever)

Then I was finished! Finally!

I ended up sorting them alphabetically.

  • Top shelf = small paperbacks
  • Middle shelf = trade-size paperbacks
  • Bottom shelf = hardcovers

And on top of the bookshelf I stacked some books too…

Ultimately, the organization results came out pretty well and it only took me three hours (which was long enough)! I do own three bookshelves in total, s the one that’s seen featured here is my main bookshelf that previous housed all manga. My collection is still not completely organized the way I completely want it, but it is definitely organized 10 times better than before. It’s so much easier to find certain books. I promise when I fully organize my book collection that I’ll do a bookshelf tour!

Did you organize your books this year or will you? Have you taken on an organization goal for 2015? Comment below!

  1. Yes, I spent most of last Saturday organizing my home library/office. I too made more room on my bookshelves by loading up 2 bags for our local thrift store. Great way to began a new year.
