My Favorite Things: January

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

Movies

Ice Road

After a remote diamond mine collapses in the far northern regions of Canada, an ice driver leads an implausible rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the lives of trapped miners despite thawing waters and a threat they never see coming.

It’s been a long while since I’ve watched any full-length action films so I decided to watch Ice Road. It’s fast-paced, with high suspense, and many thriller factors. I used to watch shows about Ice Road truckers occasionally so it was really interesting to see a film about it. This movie had me on the edge of my seat with all of its twists and turns. There were a few plot twists I did not see coming which added to the suspense factors. I think if you’re looking for a film with high adrenaline, this may be a good watch for you.

TV

Zero Chill

Talented teen figure skater Kayla is forced to leave everything behind when her family follows her twin brother, Mac, to a prestigious hockey academy.

You probably know by now that I’m a huge fan of ice skating. Especially since I just did a book recommendations list in preparation for the Winter Olympic Games. I’m bummed that this show only got canceled after one season, but the ending is solid enough that viewers won’t be left on such a cliffhanger. The show follows twin siblings as they try to navigate their lives on and off the ice rink in a brand new environment. It was a lot of fun to watch and the show’s cast had good chemistry overall. It’s very light-hearted and made me laugh a lot. My favorite parts were seeing the ice routines and hockey games in action.

Only Murders In The Building

Three strangers share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one. When a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio suspects murder and employs their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth. Perhaps even more explosive are the lies they tell one another. Soon, the endangered trio comes to realize a killer might be living among them as they race to decipher the mounting clues before it’s too late.

This was a highly anticipated show on my watch list and I literally finished watching it in two days. Now I’m eagerly waiting for Season 2 to arrive. If you are a fan of murder mysteries, true crime, or thrillers this show is for you. Gomez, Short, and Martin make a fantastic trio of amateur sleuths trying to discover the secrets in their apartment building. I liked how the show changed the POV perspectives for each episode which added to the suspense and gave backgrounds to each character. This show isn’t as gritty as most thriller shows and it balances a lot of the heavier content with comedy. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Janet Jackson

The four-hour event, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Janet’s first album, Janet Jackson (1982), is set to simulcast on Lifetime and A&E, two of the flagship channels of the A+E Networks portfolio. With full, unprecedented access to the global icon, JANET JACKSON. is an intimate, honest and unfiltered look at her untold story.

I’m a big Janet fan and have been listening to her music since I was young. I found this documentary to be interesting and gives a much deeper look at Janet behind-the-scenes. It was very cool to see footage of her working in the studio on some of her biggest hits, on the set of music videos and films, and seeing her interact with her siblings. I learned some new things about her and gained an even deeper respect for her artistry. Her work is groundbreaking and ended up influencing many artists that were inspired by her.

Youtube

Thank You for Being a Friend, Remembring The Golden Girls

This video was a bit bittersweet due to Betty White’s recent passing, but a fantastic in-depth video about the series as a whole. I learned a lot about some of the work that went into creating the series, and more about the message that the show conveyed to its audience. A good watch for any Golden Girls Fan.

The Rise and Fall of Fanfiction.Net | A Brief History

For all the former or current fan fiction readers, I thought this was a great video about how the notable website got its popularity. It was interesting to see how the website evolved over the course of its existence and fan fiction as a whole.

Music

Skate by Bruno Mars, Anderson.Paak, Silk Sonic

There are so many tracks that I love on this album, but this song has been on repeat lately. I enjoy its retro sound and feel. It makes me want to put on my roller skates and go to the roller rink on a Friday night and hang out with friends. It’s a fun and playful track.

Mess U Made by Michelle

Michelle is a new group that I’m keeping my eyes on for sure. I love the harmonizing techniques and the emotions put into their voices on this track. There’s something about this song that hits you at the core.

Dream On by Mamoru Miyano

I was surprised to see this track as the ending theme for the anime Life Lessons With Uramichi. But when I listen to the lyrics and message it resonates with the theme of the show. It’s a smooth mid-tempo track that reminds us to keep on dreaming.

  1. Were you inspired by the news to watch an action movie about Canadian truckers? *grins*

I’m watching a new reality TV series on CBC about miniature makers (i.e. dollhouse makers): it’s light and fun and I love it.
