Interview with Erin from Blerd With a Blog

Hello readers! I got the chance to interview Erin who is the creator of “Blerd With a Blog”. We talked about the Blerd experience, blogging, and favorite fandoms! I hope you all enjoy the interview!

Q&A Time!

Hi Erin, thanks for stopping by the blog! First off, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Thanks for having me. I’m 27, currently working full time while pursuing my MBA at Oakland University. I love reading, going to the movies, cosplay, and writing.

Describe how did you first get into blogging?

How I got into blogging was kind of random. The idea hit me around the holidays a couple years ago. I was scrolling through Instagram and noticed a lack of female blerd bloggers, and a lot of the big pages mostly covered big episodes and movies. I also saw they could be overly critical sometimes. I wanted to provide a voice my friends could relate to.

What is your blog’s focus?

My focus is to discuss popular blerd/nerd topics but also bring light to some of the issues and struggles of being a female blerd.

What are your nerdy interests? (ex. Books, movies, comics)

I have so many it’s crazy lol. My biggest one is superheroes, mostly DC Comics. I’ll always rep them over Marvel despite the bad choices made in the DCEU. I love all things Harry Potter, and am a proud Gryffindor. I also love all things Disney. Those are my 3 biggest fandoms.

Being, a female blerd, how would you say your experience as a nerd differs from others?

I think being a female blerd is different because it’s like being a minority within a minority. The blerd community is huge and growing but there’s still some disbelief that women can be part of it. I can’t count how often guys are surprised about my blerd knowledge or that I’m even interested in stuff like that. It’s made it harder for me to open up to people because that fear of ridicule is still there.

What do you hope people will gain from your blog?

I want people to gain understanding about my point of view as well as feel accepted for their opinions. The term blerd did start off meaning Black people but anyone is free to voice their opinion respectfully. I want to normalize being a blerd/nerd and show others that they aren’t alone.

What are your favorite TV Shows, Anime, Books, Etc? What is a must watch/read that you would recommend?

If they haven’t yet, everyone needs to read Harry Potter. I’m running into more and more people who never read the books. I also recommend the Mortal Instruments book series. It was way better than the show. I recommend all the DC hero shows on CW. Attack on Titan is great, even if you don’t really like anime that much. I love Supernatural and I’m sad this is the last season airing.

What would you say that is the biggest challenge about blogging?

I struggle a lot with consistency. I was trying to post weekly but life happens. I say that often but it’s true. Between working full time, school and social obligations it’s hard.

How do you manage time to run your blog efficiently?

I’ll let you know once I get there lol. I have taken an extended hiatus but when I was posting regularly, I made sure I had a list of topics to last at least a month and planned out time to watch the shows or get to the movies. For topics like bullying and mental health it was just a matter of giving myself enough time before Friday to write and edit the entire article.

In the future where do you hope your blog will take you?

That’s what I’m trying to figure out now. I’m not quitting, but I took a step back because of school and to reevaluate what I want to accomplish. It’d be nice to be able to travel to different cons and interview professional cosplayers and celebrities.
