Indie Bookstores To Visit in Metro Detroit Pt.2

Hello everyone! I love visiting independent bookstores and shopping at local businesses regularly. Because it’s important to #shopsmall, here are some bookstores in the Metro Detroit area that you should visit when you’re here. Some of these shops have websites that you can shop at as well if you can’t shop in person!

Detroit Book City

Detroit Book City is a small Black-owned bookstore located in Southfield, MI. I had the pleasure of also interviewing one of the owners, Janeice Hayes for a local paper who is incredibly kind. They mainly carry books and media that cater to the African-American consumer market. They also host a large annual African-American Family Book Expo and a lot of community based events.

Paperback Outlet

Located in Warren, MI is a small, full-service bookstore that offers new and used books. They have an established reader’s group as well as hold author signings. Though Paperback Outlet doesn’t buy back books, they have a really great trading program where you can bring in your books and get new ones in return! The owners are very friendly and courteous, so if you ever need help finding a specific book or a want some suggestions, ask away!

Vault of Midnight

Vault of Midnight is an amazing comic shop with a great overall ambience. The design of the shop alone had me in awe when I first visited. They have a wide array of comics and graphic novels from kids to adults. They also carry a lot of new titles and anything you can’t get your hands on can be special ordered for you. The staff is fun to chat with and they offer some great suggestions. They have three stores in total located in Downtown Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Ann Arbor.

Library Bookstore

This is a used book store located in Ferndale, MI that offers used books at decent princes. Like most used book stores you’ll have to hunt for what your looking for, but they have distinctive sections for each genre. It’s a small store with an inviting atomosphere. You’ll definitely find some new reads by shopping here.

Liberty Comics

This is a comic shop near and dear to me since I discovered it through shopping during Free Comic Book Day. Located in Roseville, MI this comic shop doesn’t carry any manga, but has tons of comics and collectible (figurines) in stock. I like to shop here to check out the newest releases and I always find some new books to take back home with me. It’s got a cozy atomopshere and a nice selection.

Stay tuned for part three! What bookstores do you like to visit in your area?
