Bibliophile Tips: 4 Ways to Get The Most Out of Your Library

Hello everyone! I’m back with another round of Bibliophile Tips! Today I’ll be chatting about some tips to help you show your local library more love and support while getting the most out of your library card. As someone who fiercely loved libraries since childhood and worked in a library for some years, I am so passionate about the joy libraries bring.

Checking Out Their Programming

A lot of people forget that libraries are hubs for their communities and while offering books and media, they also host so many wonderful events. From author talks and seasonal crafts to musical concerts and more. Since I was a kid, when I wanted to get out of my house, I always looked to my local library to see what kinds of events were being put on. Because of my library card, I had access to things such as Anime Club and Summer Reading programs.

Use Their Apps

Overdrive/Libby/Hoopla are your best friends! These apps allow you to sync across all your devices, so you can stream titles immediately giving you more access to books, audiobooks, movies, and more. It’s easy to use and helpful for when you’re on the go.

Get to Know Your Library Staff

When I worked at the library, I had such joy seeing regular patrons that I got to interact with (except for the few who were not so good). The librarians as well as the circulation staff know their stuff and are always ready to help. I loved working in circulation and getting to chat about my favorite authors or recommend new books and the same goes for libraries. Don’t be afraid to ask them for help and say hi!

Saving Money

The library will save you money! Checking out library items is free! Plus at the end of the year/during your checkout (depending on the library) feature where each receipt tells you the cost of all the books you took out and “how much you saved” in your visit, plus our total amount saved for the year. Then you can really see how much you saved.

What are some library tips you have to share? Let me know in the comments.

  1. I agree wholeheartedly, I love libraries. As a child I would struggle to carry a stack of books, almost as tall as I was to the checkout desk every other week. To me a library is like a candy store. Over the years I’ve worked at three local libraries and really enjoy it. Besides the programming, libraries provide access to computers for people without Internet to apply for jobs, check emails and search for information.
