What Reading Challenges Should You Try in 2021?

Gearing up for a new year means seeking out reading challenges and making bookish goals. There are so many reading challenges to choose from. Today I’m sharing some reading challenges that you may want to try in 2021.

Audiobook Challenge – This annual reading challenge is hosted by Caffeinated Reviewer. The goal is a new love for audios or to outdo yourself by listening to more audios in 2021 than you did in 2019. This is a good challenge for avid audio book listeners or people who want to try to listen to more audiobooks.

Book Riot Read Harder Challenge – Book Riot’s challenge has 24 tasks designed to help you break out of your reading bubble and expand your worldview through books. I’ve tried this challenge before and though I didn’t complete it, it pushed me to read more books outside of my comfort zone. I had fun with this!

A to Z Reading Challenge – The premise is simple for this year-long reading challenge. It encourages readers to choose a book starting with each letter of the alphabet. I’ve done this challenge many times and I love the challenge of finding alphabet letter titles to complete the challenge.

PopSugar Reading Challenge – This one has 50 fun and unique book prompts will help you accomplish your 2021 reading goals by diversify your reading by diving into niche genres. I always hear about how much fun this challenge is so I may try it for next year!

Beat The Backlist Reading Challenge – For those that are trying to focus on reading more books from your bookshelves, this may the challenge for you. It’s designed to help you tackle all the books you keep meaning to read and still haven’t. The book must be published in the previous year or earlier.

Reading Women Challenge – In this reading challenge you can complete as many challenges as you can from the list below. The goal is to encourage you to read widely and this year they are focusing on reading international authors (authors from countries other than your own). I love the prompts for this challenge!

Uncorked Reading Challenge – If you love to travel like me, this challenge may satisfy your inner travel bug.  This reading challenge has 12 themes with books to inspire travel, inspirational fiction and nonfiction, and diverse, international reads. It seems low-key and exciting!

Books in Translation Challenge – This is another challenge I’ve tried in the past! I always am looking to read more translated works so I may try it again. All you have to do read a book that’s been translated from any language into the language of your choosing.

What reading challenges do you want to try in 2021? Let me know in the comments.

  1. I tried to do the Free Black Women’s Library Reading Challenge last year, and it didn’t work out. Idea was to read books by Black women or Black nonbinary authors that fit 20 different prompts. I got through maybe 1/3 of the prompts.

    1. I do remember hearing about that challenge last year. I’m hoping that I can at least complete one challenge besides my usual Goodreads goal.

  2. Thanks for signing up for my Books in Translation challenge! Your other challenges look like fun too. I’ve signed up for the Audiobook and Uncorked challenges as well. I keep finding more challenges I want to join! Good luck with all of them and I hope you enjoy your books for the year!

    1. Thanks! I ended up just sharing most of these challenges, since I don’t think I can handle them all. But I am so excited to do the Books in Translation challenge. I have some books that are perfect for it.
