Slice of Life: Life of a Freelance Writer

Hello Everyone It’s been a while since I shared another Slice of Life post with you, so today I thought I’d share my thoughts on working as a freelance writer!

How did I get started as a writer? I’ve been writing stories since I was about ten years old, but I got my first taste of journalism while working for my high school newspaper, The Observer. I loved working behind the scenes of a newspaper and all of the hard work it entailed to spread current news, promote interesting local events and share little known facts about school staff and students. During my college career, I decided to work as a copy editor for The Oakland Post. As a copy editor I proofread stories and used the computer software, InDesign, to create layout and place stories/pictures on the pages. While I wasn’t writing stories, it was fun to hang out with the rest of the news crew to spread campus news.

Though I loved journalism I felt like I wanted to major in something broad with lots of options so I ended up graduating with an English degree. It allowed me to study literature which I love, but also fueled my inner writing bug. I can still work within the journalism field, be an academic writer, and even write creatively. Since did a ton of reading in my literature classes, I was looking for some way to writing on the side. So I took a leap and turned to blogging.

In 2013, I created, Life of a Female Bibliophile, the blog which you know today. But still missing the spark that journalism gave me, I went searching around for place to write stories for the public once again. I started writing stories for, The Pit Media, a website that covers sports and a wide variety of entertainment news such as TV, film, and video games. I also am a freelance writer for Digital First Media, where I write various articles on local arts and entertainment stories for The Oakland Press.

Freelance writing is such a joy! I love the thrill of searching for a story to share with the public. I mainly write Arts & Enterntainment stories which I love. Though my freelance work I’ve met and spoken to so many interesting individuals in my community and beyond. I have interviewed artists, shop owners, musicians, authors, organizations and so much more. The more stories I write about others, the more I learn about myself.

Some of my favorite stories include:
