Slice Of Life: It’s My Birthday!

Last week I celebrated my birthday! šŸ˜€

I kept it a bit low-key this year, but I still hadĀ lots ofĀ fun. Even though I’ve been saving my money, I splurged and got myself a cute Totoro sweatshirt! It’s so warm and cozy! I’ve been eyeing Totoro clothing at Hot Topic for a while now, I decided to go ahead and treat myself.

It says…”Try laughing. Then whatever scares you will go away.”

I also got some books for my birthday as well. Those books along with purchases from this month and January will show up in a later post this month, so stay tuned.

As for my birthday dinner, I decided to go to Sushi Bon. It’s a small little restaurant that serves Japanese and Korean dishes. I’d been there once before and I was excited to eat there again. Sushi Bon has lots of sushi to choose from, so for all you sushi lovers out there check it out!

Here’s just a sample of their sushi menu. This is not even all of it, I swear…

My mom and I started off our dining experience with miso soup, which I love!

Yum!

Since I’m not a big fan of sushi and I wanted to try something new, I decided to order Bulgogi. Bulgogi is aĀ Korean dish that usually consists of grilled marinated beef. It tasted pretty good, and I think the only that it was missing was a little BBQ sauce.I ate them with chopsticks, which took a while since I still new at it. But I’ve noticed I’m slowly getting better at it every time I use them!

My mom decided to eat some shrimp fried rice.

And to top of the meal? *Drumroll* Mango mochi ice cream! I’ve never eaten actual mochi or mochi ice cream before, but it tasted pretty good!

Of course no birthday is complete without extra desserts so I went out andĀ got a small chocolate birthday cake since I was going to have a bigger cake at my graduation dinner.

The next night, IĀ headed out to the Detroit Film Theater to watch their annual program where they showed the Oscar nominated short films. It was such an amazing experience and I’m glad I finally got the chance to attend this event since I’ve missed it the previous years before. The program was split into two sections: animated and live-action films. To tell you the truth though, I enjoyed the animated films more thanĀ the live-action ones.

Here are some pictures I took of the theater. The architecture is absolutely beautiful and they have such great programs. I highly recommend visiting this theater at least once if you’re in the area.

My favorite Oscar nominated films shown are:

  • Animated
    • Feast
    • A Single Life
    • The Dam Keeper (which gets my overall winning vote)
  • Live-Action
    • Parvaneh (also gets my winning vote)
    • The Phone Call
    • Boogaloo and Graham

And last but not least, to end the weekend I had my graduation dinner. I originally graduated in December, but since my ceremony was right before Christmas, things were pretty hectic and I decided to postpone it until after the holidays.

It was held in a banquet room in a hotel and it was so pretty! I was really glad to get the chance to spend timeĀ with family members, some of which I don’t get to see too often,Ā and friends came as well. IĀ made my own personal party playlist which turned out to be an eclectic mix of music. The food was absolutely delicious. The menu consisted of chicken, grilled salmon, salad, potatoes, bread rolls, my birthday cake, apple pie, and cinnamon ice cream. Needless to say, I got my fill of good food for the night.

And this concludes my slice of life birthday edition post! I’m proud that I’ve graduated from college and have gotten a degree in something I’ve always had a passion for. Even though everything is new, exciting, and scary right now I’m ready to try new things, travel, and start to pursue my dreams and career plans. I thank God for another safe, happy, and healthy year of being alive! šŸ™‚
