The Perks of Working in a Library!

Hello Bookish People! Today I thought I would do a fun random post on the blog. I currently work in the circulation department of a local library and really enjoy my job. Working in a library is truly an experience and here are some of the perks from working in such a cool place. Enjoy!

1)  Being surrounded constantly by books.

Books all day, everyday! I check in books, process them, shelve them, and look at them all day. Some would think you would get tired of being around books all the time, but I love it. It’s as if I feel at home.

2) Getting to talk to/work with people who love reading as much as you do.

My coworkers and I are all passionate readers. We swap stories about books, ask each other about our current reads, and even force kindly suggest book recommendations to one another. On top of that, nothing makes me happier to see a child getting their first library card, or joyfully carrying a large stack of books to the circulation counter. It’s great to see kids that love to read!

3) Not getting late fees.

Yep, you read that right. No late fees at all! I am notorious 50% of the time for not returning books on time. Usually I’m on top of things, but sometimes those return dates escape my memory.

4) Finding new books to add to my TBR on a daily basis.

I’ve gotten a better control on it now, but I can’t tell you how often I’m shelving books and find 5-10 titles that I want to grab off the shelves and read immediately. Even though my TBR pile is enormous I always find interesting books that I’m unaware of and want to check them out ASAP.

5) Being able to process/look at all the new books that are ordered.

It’s so cool to see new books and AV material that we order before it’s processed for the public. I get to see the anticipated new reads that everyone is talking about and it’s awesome! Plus I get to process them (ex. put plastic on the cover, stamp the books, etc.) and it’s quite fun!

6) Promoting literacy, books, and all of the awesome things a library has to offer.

(Source)

This is self-explanatory, but working at a library means you get to promote literacy and how truly magical reading is. We get to tell patrons about all of the awesome programs and services that our library has to offer. Sometimes I have gotten the annoying question, “But aren’t libraries dead?” Which is far from the truth. Libraries are changing to fit the times, but it’s still a staple that is needed in every community.

Do you have a job at a library or work in a profession that deals with books? Let me know what your experiences are like in the comment section. 🙂

  1. Aww, this is such a lovely post! I work in publishing, which means lots of book-adjacent-ness, but my TBR stays relatively under control — like, as under control as any blogger’s TBR list can be. :p But working in a library sounds great, especially getting the chance to see new books as they’re coming in!

    1. Thank you! Working in publishing is my dream job! It sounds like a wonderful place to work at plus I know there’s multiple sectors to work in.
