My Top 5 Anticipated Reads For Fall 2013

Fall is here. School is in season, the weather is becoming colder, and Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte reigns once again (that drink is way too delicious). New movies, TV, and most importantly books are here! So I thought why not share my own personal picks of what I want to read this season from the latest and popular releases.

Here are my top five anticipated reads for fall:

1) The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black

Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown’s gates, you can never leave. (bookish.com)

First of all I’m a big fan of Holly Black’s books. Especially her faerie ones. The story line is different form the other books I’ve read by her so I’m really intrigued. It’s a zombie themed story so it’s probably gonna be awesome (seeing as I’m a big fan of The Walking Dead, Shaun of the Dead, and other zombie themed media).

2) Shadows by Robin McKinley

Maggie knows something’s off about Val, her mom’s new husband. Val is from Oldworld, where they still use magic, and he won’t have any tech in his office-shed behind the house. But—more importantly— what are the huge, horrible, jagged, jumpy shadows following him around? (bookish.com)

Oooo! A book with magic! The story sounds interesting and I love the cover. It looks so eerie and creepy, so I’m hoping it’s a very suspenseful read.

3) Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

Set against Iceland’s stark landscape, Hannah Kent brings to vivid life the story of Agnes, who, charged with the brutal murder of her former master, is sent to an isolated farm to await execution. (Barnes & Noble)

I like the fact that the story is set in historical background of 1829. I don’t know why, but for some reason the plot reminds me of Shutter Island, mainly because of the dreary setting of the island (well at least that’s how I picture it in my mind) and the fact that she’s charged with murder. Anyways, a good mystery read.

4) The Ocean at The End of The Lane by Neil Gaiman

A brilliantly imaginative and poignant fairy tale from the modern master of wonder and terror, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is Neil Gaiman’s first new novel for adults since his #1 New York Times bestseller Anansi Boys. (Barnes & Noble)

Looks interesting. I’m really excited to read this book because I haven’t read a book by Neil Gaiman since I was a kid. (“Coraline”, anyone? It’s one of my favorite books!) Another cool mystery read.

5) Divergent by Veronica Roth

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. (bookish.com)

I bought this book recently and can’t wait to read it! I’ve heard so many good things about the entire series by fans and readers alike . Also the movie is coming out soon, so I would like to finish the book before I see it on the big screen.

What are your top reads for this fall? Let me know 🙂

  1. Good picks! Burial Rites has been on my hold list at the library for a while now. Can’t wait to read it! Some picks you might enjoy are: Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo, The Thinking Woman’s Guide to Magic by Emily Croy Barker, The Butterfly Sister by Amy Gail Hansen, The Wicked Girls by Alex Marwood, and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell; they’re all on my TBR list for fall.
