My Favorite Things: September

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

Movies

Holly Star

A cash-strapped puppeteer returns home for the holidays and gets caught up in a treasure hunt with her paintball-obsessed best friend, her tango-dancing grandmother, and a childhood sweetheart.

I watch Christmas movies all year long and found this film while surfing through Netflix. What I thought would be an over-the-top movie turned out to be a very heartwarming film that has many comedic moments. It’s wacky and fun, while also having many tender moments between the main characters. You could really feel for the main character’s struggles as she tries to get back on her feet and is inspired to get back on track with a treasure hunt. It was really nice to see how this movie added in the puppeteering parts to help the narrative flow in the movie. If you’re looking for a cozy Christmas comedy, give this movie a watch.

Podcasts

Stuff Mom Never Told You

Join hosts Anney and Samantha to listen to Stuff Mom Never Told You, continuing the conversation of what it is to identify as female through research-based discussion around feminism and how it impacts everyday life.

I remember finding out about this podcast through Instagram and I’m so glad I listened to it. They cover so many topics on this podcast through the lens of feminism. From historical figures, friendship breakups, and urban legends they cover it all. It’s entertaining and I always come away from the podcast learning something new.

YouTube

Ada on Demand

Ada makes videos about pop culture, politics, and current events on her channel. I’ve gotten more into commentary and video essay videos as of lately. Her videos have a wide range of content and I think she makes interesting points about topics in pop culture.

Study to Success

On the Study To Success channel, Estella posts videos about studying, study tips, productivity, stationery, & more! As an avid stationery fan, I love to watch her organizational videos and see her huge stationery collection. Her videos are calming and she has a lot of good tips for productivity.

Music

Stereotype by Stay-C

This rookie K-pop group has been popping up on my radar. The visuals and song are bright and colorful. I like that the lyrics are about celebrating youth and confidence but also talks about having vulnerabilities. It’s so poppy and the melody is so catchy that I’ve had the song on repeat for weeks.

The Best Thing by Mocca

I listen to quite a lot of Indie Pop and one of my favorite bands is Mocca which is based in Indonesia. This song is a great pick me up and the lyrics are cute. I love the 60’s-esque sound of the melody.

I’ll Be Missing You by Puff Daddy [feat. Faith Evans & 112]

I’ve been listening to a lot of decades’ music stations on the radio and this song popped back up. I haven’t heard it in ages and the lyrics are so meaningful. I really miss 90s hip-hop/R&B. The sound is timeless.

  1. I laughed when I saw your Christmas movie! Heheh

One highlight from my reading September was Tochi Onyibuchi’s War Girls, the first in his series of the same name. OOH it’s a terrific YA pageturner; OTOH he’s raising all sorts of interesting questions that feel painfully relevant in these polarized political times.
