My Favorite Things: September

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

TV

May I Blackmail You?

Synopsis: Kanji Senkawa receives requests which the police or private investigators can’t handle. He solves the cases by threatening people. Kanji Senkawa meets wealthy university student Mio Kanesaka . She has a good heart and and can’t ignore those in difficult situations. Kanji and Mio get involved in various cases including voice phishing and kidnappings.

This is actually quite a lighthearted J-Drama (at least so far) despite the dubious title. I was familiar with the lead actors Emi Takei and Dean Fujikawa and was interested in checking this out since I like other shows/movies they’ve acted in. It’s pretty funny and the blackmailing cases presented aren’t too dark. Each episode focuses on a new case and we see how the blackmailer becomes misconstrued and wants revenge. I love the witty banter and of Mio and Kenji as the leads in this rom-com. Especially since Mio’s humor is a bit punny at she takes everything literally. It’s pretty entertaining.

The Patriot Act

Synopsis: “The Daily Show” alumnus Hasan Minhaj gets the spotlight to himself — and his name in the title — on this Netflix original series. The Peabody Award-winning comic explores the modern cultural and political landscape with depth and sincerity. In each weekly episode, he uses his unique comedic voice and storytelling skill to investigate the larger trends shaping the fragmented world.

This is a pretty interesting show that was recommend to me by one of my good friends. It reminds me a little of the format of The Daily Show and Adam Ruins Everything. I like that each episode goes into depth about a particular subject (ex. fast fashion, climate change) and is presented in way that is easy to digest. Though Hassan’s show is infused with comedy, he definitely gets the point across to his audience. I’ve learned a lot of new things by watching this show.

Plus One

Synopsis: Long-time friends Alice Mori and Ben King find themselves in that inevitable year that all late 20-somethings experience—in which seemingly every person they know gets married—and agree to be one another’s plus ones as they power through an endless parade of insufferable weddings.

I’ve been in a definite Romance Comedy movie mood as of lately and I found this cute movie on Hulu. Following the friends-to-lovers trope I like how the movies focus on them begrudgingly going to multiple weddings and acting as each other’s plus one. It’s very funny, full of raunchy humor, and I really like the acting in this one. The chemistry between the two leads was solid and I loved the slow progression of them developing more than a friendship.

Beauty

BH Cosmetics Mini Zodiac Aquarius Shadow Palette

I love this eyeshadow palette so much! When I saw this palette with my Zodiac sign in the store I picked it up asap. I like that it’s a mini-size (since I don’t wear eyeshadow too much) and I love the color variety. Outside of neutrals I always gravitate to hues of blue. This a good deal for what you get in this palette.

Music

Dynamite by BTS

My boys are back! *insert heart eyes*. Dynamite is such a summer song, with that retro sound and feel that I love. The melody is incredibly catchy and the chorus alone it’s a instant hit. It’s a song that keeps me dancing and I love how colorful the MV is.

Kick, Push by Lupe Fiasco

This is one of my favorite Lupe Fiasco songs ever! I love the brassy horns, jazz sounds, hip-hop infused beats, and the Lupe’s smooth rapping style. I never get tired of listening to this song and it’s a good driving track.

Squeeze by Shaun Wasabi

I love this fun electronic track created by Wasabi. It’s got a bubbly vibe to it and it’s a song that puts you in a good mood just based on the melody. Rachael’s light vocals and rapping really adds to the track overall. This song always makes me think of Ramune (a Japanese drink).

Youtube

Ryan Hollinger

As I’ve discussed on the blog before, I’m a big fan of the horror genre and one Youtube that discusses this in detail is Ryan’s. From Shutter Island to the Final Destination film series I like the wide variety of content he discusses. I like his in-depth discussions, critical review, and the dose of nostalgia I get from watching him cover things I’ve watched in the past.

  1. I’ve learned a lot from Patriot Act too: it’s a great combination of entertainment and information. September went by so quickly, didn’t it. One of my favourite reads was Lee Conel’s first novel The Party Upstairs about a young woman who’s the daughter of a building’s manager; their family lives in the basement and is responsible for maintaining and repairing things, and she’s returned home in her twenties because her career plans haven’t materialized as she’d hoped. And I watched this quirky movie set in Iceland, about a young single mother struggling financially who takes a job working at the border, where she flags another young woman’s passport as fraudulent, which strands the woman in Iceland without a support system, and how their lives intertwine from that meeting (And Breathe Normally, on NF).

    1. I agree about September. Time is going back way too fast. The movie you watched sounds particularly interesting too. I do like quirky movies. I hope you find lots of good content to enjoy in October.
