TV

My Husband, Mr. Oh!

Synopsis: Han Seung-Joo  is a single woman in her mid 30’s and she works as a PD at a broadcasting station. She does well at her job, but she is not nearly as good when it comes to housework. Han Seung-Joo has a hard time dealing with social prejudices about single women. To get the position of a “married woman,” Han Seung-Joo marries Oh Jak-Doo who lives in the mountain. Their marriage is not based on love, but their relationship develops romantically.

Looking for a new K-drama to watch I sought out a show that was currently airing and chose this one. It’s definitely a slower paced show. With 20 plus episodes I think I’ll take my time with this one. It’s definitely a character-driven show and so far I like everything about it except for Seung Joo’s mean family members and the second lead characters which are just so-so. I like the general plot, but at times get frustrated with it because Seung-Joo is basically treated like a social-piranha until she gets married. The chemistry between the main leads is what’s keeping my going, but I also like the writers are bringing up discussions about careers, marriage, sexism, and more within the plot.

Outlander Season 3

Synopsis: The third season of Outlander picks up right after Claire travels through the stones to return to her life in 1948. Now pregnant, she struggles with the fallout of her sudden reappearance and its effect on her marriage to her first husband, Frank. Meanwhile, in the 18th century, Jamie suffers from the aftermath of his doomed last stand at the historic battle of Culloden, as well as the loss of Claire. As the years pass, Jamie and Claire attempt to make lives apart from one another, each haunted by the memory of their lost love. When they find each other, will they be the same people who parted at the standing stones all those years ago?

Outlander! I’m still working my way through season 3, but so far I enjoyed it. I was waiting for the episodes for when Claire and Jamie finally unite once again. Like the other seasons, I love the costume design, cinematography, and the actors. It’s what makes this show so entertaining and authentic. I know every season follows one book so I know I need to catch up!

I’ll Have What Phil’s Having

Synopsis: Producer Phil Rosenthal, creator of “Everybody Loves Raymond,” explores culinary specialties and unusual cuisine around the world. Each hourlong episode takes Rosenthal — and viewers — on new adventures that include visits to artisans, markets, vineyards and farmers. The unscripted series allows Rosenthal to seek out people and places who are keeping traditions alive, and some that are creating new ones.

If you don’t already know, I love travel shows. I have the travel bug within me 24/7 and I love going on trips (big or small) to explore new places. My friend recommended this show to me as it’s a combination of travel and the culinary world.  The host Phil has a lively personality that makes it fun to watch. He shows a good variety of the foods and places to visit around the globe and each episode is set in one country. I love shows like this!

Insecure Season 1

Synopsis: The first season explores the black female experience from the perspective of the two female protagonists, Issa and Molly who have been best friends with each other since their college days at Stanford. They are both in their late 20s, career and relationship experiences are explored. Issa works at a non-profit that benefits middle-school students of color. Issa has a long-term relationship with Lawrence. Molly is a successful corporate attorney who has career success but difficulty with dating men. The half-hour series explores social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience.

I’ve been meaning to watch this show as soon as it came out, but sadly I don’t have HBO so I settled to wait for the DVD to be released. I’ve enjoyed Issa Rae’s work ever since she created web series back in the day. Insecure feels a lot like a grown up version of Adventures of an Awkward Black Girl. As a twenty-something black woman I felt that I could relate to it on so many levels. I loved that while it’s comedy it tackles tons of issues such as sexism, racism, dating, careers, and so much more. I thought the characters were well-developed and the OST is great too. Looking forward to Season Two.

Movies

After The Ball

Synopsis: After a young fashion designer runs afoul of her corrupt stepmother and stepsisters, she dons a disguise to help save the family business for her father.

I always enjoy a Cinderella themed movie, so I thought this would be a fun watch. It’s predictable, but I liked how they made “Cinderella” into a fashion designer who wants to reach the top. The environment in which she works in kind of reminded me of Ugly Betty, which is one of my favorite shows. It’s a charming rom-com full of lovable characters, fun times, and a few cringe-worthy moments. Some of the acting is a bit sub-par, but nothing I couldn’t tolerate.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Synopsis: Four teenagers are sucked into a magical video game, and the only way they can escape is to work together to finish the game.

I was so weary when I heard they were doing a reboot of the film that is near and dear to my childhood. I knew it wouldn’t be the same, but I didn’t want them to ruin my favorite film. Upon the recommendation of others, I decided to watch it and was pleasantly surprised. What I loved most about the film is that they took the concept of the board game, but changed the plot completely. There were new characters which were hilarious, and it was action packed. Jack Black had the best character of all and he had me constantly cracking up. While this reboot doesn’t beat the original, it’s still an enjoyable movie.

One Small Hitch

Synopsis: On a flight home to Chicago for a family wedding, childhood friends Josh and Molly innocently agree to fake a wedding engagement to make Josh’s dying father happy. Things quickly get out of hand with their two boisterous families, and a series of events causes them to pretend to be a couple and start planning a phony wedding.

I was in the mood for a cheesy romantic comedy and this movie really delivered! It had that friends to lovers trope which I adore in books and movies. I thought the acting was pretty good and the chemistry between the main leads was solid. Like most rom-coms it was full of crazy antics that had me laughing out loud especially when both sides of the family kept intervening. It was a funny and heartfelt film that I recommend.

Music

Schoolhouse Rock!

Feeling nostalgic lately, I sought out some of my favorite tunes from Schoolhouse Rock which was an instrumental tool in my education as a child. It just shows that learning things to the tune of a catchy melody stick with you for a long time.

I Like It by Cardi B feat. Bad Bunny & J Balvin

The Spanish melody (gives off a Havana vibe) combined with the beats in this song make it excellent. Cardi B’s rapping is excellent as always and this song is a great fit for her. I feel like I’ll be playing this all summer long.

Blooming Day by EXO-CBX

I love this song even more than the first sub unit’s single! Blooming Day is the perfect dance track for the spring/summer season. It’s poppy, energetic, and the funky melody adds to the beat. The MV uses a bright color scheme which definitely adds to the
