My Favorite Things: March

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

TV

Mystic Pop-Up Bar

Synopsis: Ssanggab Cart Bar opens only at night on the rooftop of a building. Wol-Ju runs the mysterious food cart. Customers who visit Ssanggab Cart Bar consist of normal people and the dead. While drinking alcohol and eating dishes with Wol-Ju, the customers of Ssanggab Cart Bar talk about themselves and try to heal their internal wounds.

Netflix has been picking up more and more adaptations each year, one of them being Mystic Pop-Up Bar. This series is based on a South Korean webtoon and it’s a contemporary story with many fantasy/paranormal elements. I am a big fan of the lead actress (I’ve enjoyed many of her other dramas) and I was intrigued by the synopsis. Not only does this series features scenes with delicious foods, but it’s got an intriguing story that flips back from the past to the present. There’s romance, comedy, bittersweet stories, and lots of action-packed scenes. I like the underlying mystery elements and the chemistry of the cast. I’m looking forward to seeing how this one ends.

Genius: Aretha

Synopsis: The anthology series focuses on untold stories of the world’s most brilliant innovators.

The third season of Genius (which I just now discovered) focuses on the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Even though I’m a Detroit native-like Aretha and learned about her growing up while listening to her music I discovered so much in this series. I’m also finding that I need to dig deep into her catalog of music since I haven’t listened to much of her B-sides. Erivo does a fantastic job of portraying Aretha in her performance and vocals. It was interesting to learn more about her background and rise to fame. I really enjoy mini-series like these and I hope to watch more soon.

Miss Back

Synopsis: The program will be a mix between a documentary and variety show, and will follow a group of female singers who made their debut in idol groups but are slowly being forgotten in the minds of the public. Through the show, they will be able to share their stories, prepare stunning performances, and hope for another chance at success as singers.

Being that I’ve been a K-Pop fan since 2009, I’ve seen a lot of groups come and go. I like Baek Z Young’s music and how she’s using her expertise to help these female vocalists who’ve fallen out of the limelight. The viewers get to hear their personal stories of being a singer and working in the entertainment industry. They’re very open about struggles with mental health, trying to be a soloist, and find their identity as an artist. It’s nice to see these singers get a second chance to shine and share their talents on stage. I would like to see future seasons of this since I don’t see too many variety shows such as this.

Youtube

Ashleigh Lauren

As you might already know, I love thrifting, crafting, and home decor. Ashleigh’s channel is a joy to watch because she brings so many innovative and creative videos about budget DIYs and restoring thrifted furniture. Her videos have a calming sense to them and her project videos are easy to follow.

Storied

A newer channel I’ve discovered is Storied. I love their variety of videos from talking about how gargoyles made their first appearance in literature to videos such as the one featured here about graphic novels. They have interesting videos that open up wider discussions and also teach me new things about the literary world. Their videos are informative and entertaining.

Music

Come Over by VanJess

If you have not listened to VanJess, you are missing out! I’ve been a fan of this musical sister duo since their first covers on Youtube. Their newest EP Homegrown has a retro vibe in look and style. I love the 70s theme of this music video and the smooth vocals on this track.

Broke Boy by Malia Civetz

I found Malia through a Spotify playlist and I love her voice so much. I love that this track is a blend of pop and soul and it’s got an overall funky vibe. This song makes me dance every time I hear it. It’s definitely a mood booster track.

Lovesong (the way) by Charlie Burg, Bluets

If an indie pop or a coffee house vibe is what you’re going for, then it’s this track. Charlie’s voice has a very soothing quality that meshes well with the guitar melody. It’s a track I like to have in the background when I’m writing or relaxing.

  1. When I listened to some of the podcasts which came out after Aretha’s death, I was amazed by how much I hadn’t known/heard about her life and experiences. Definitely worth looking into in more detail. I’ve not heard of that series either!

In March, I started watching “Superstore”. With a lot of years in retail, it makes me cringe and laugh, in equal parts.

    Happy April to you!

    1. Same here about Aretha’s life. I learned that I haven’t scratched the surface of her music catalog. There’s so much I haven’t listened to. I should look up some podcasts and books to read too. And glad you’re enjoying Superstore. It gives me all the feelings from my retail days, but it makes me laugh so much!
