My Favorite Things: June Edition

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

TV

Part Time Idol

Synopsis: The storyline takes place at an entertainment agency. After creating a bunch of famous idols, a producer begins to question the whole process of making a star, so he goes on a break for a few years. Once he returns to the company, he gathers some trainees left on the back burner and tries to launch a co-ed idol group. The trainees undergo some peculiar training to debut in this group.

I was looking for a short web drama to watch while on a road trip recently and happened upon this show which was recommended by my co-worker. At five, thirty minute episodes Part-Time Idol does not disappoint and I’m glad I watched it. It’s silly, over the top, and purposely meant to not be taken too seriously which makes the viewing experience so much fun. All the lead actors are from YG Entertainment (since the show is produced by it) and it gave a glimpse into all the work put into debuting a group. I liked its positive message about never giving up and being confident.

Aggretsuko

Synopsis:  Frustrated with her thankless office job, Retsuko the Red Panda copes with her daily struggles by belting out death metal karaoke after work. … Underappreciated and overworked, Retsuko the Red Panda turns to death metal karaoke to cope with the stresses of modern office life.

Ever since Sanrio has released Retsuko, she has been one my new favorite characters from the company. I had been watching the shorts online for a while, but once I heard Netflix was releasing a show I was beyond elated! This show is humorous and filled with many events which usually takes place within an office space. It accurately portrays workplace stereotypes/situations which makes it so relatable to a wide audience. I loved watching Retsuko take on obstacles and express her frustrations through metal karaoke. I’m patiently awaiting Season Two which was just announced!

Movies

Mary and The Witch’s Flower

Synopsis: The film tells a story of a girl named Mary who finds a mysterious flower that can give her the power to become a witch for only one night.

When I heard animators/artists from the critically acclaimed Studio Ghibli were creating a new studio, I was excited for what was to come. Mary and The Witch’s Flower is their studio debut and its a fun film for a wide audience. The art style is very similar to Ghibli films and it’s so detailed that it’s realistic. The animation is the highlight of this movie! The plot does fall a bit short in the sense that it’s very formulaic and predictable, but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed it!

The Incredibles 2

Synopsis: The plot follows the Parr family as they balance regaining the public’s trust of superheroes with their civilian family life, only to combat a new foe who seeks to turn the populace against all supers.

I and many others have waited for this sequel for so long and it delivered! It brought all the elements of the first film that I loved and I actually enjoyed the sequel more. All the favorites and some new characters come back in a wonderfully animated action packed film. I was so entertained that I was never bored, but I was annoyed by people who didn’t know how to be quiet in a movie theater. Elastic Girl and Jack Jack stole the show in this one. Also the Pixar short called Bao before the film made me cry and was heartwarming.

Winchester

Synopsis: Ensconced in her sprawling California mansion, eccentric firearm heiress Sarah Winchester believes she is haunted by the souls of people killed by the Winchester repeating rifle.

I was a bit weary to watch movie because of the mixed reviews, but I was in the mood for something spooky so I decided to stick with it. The only really bad thing I have to say about this movie is that the plot was extremely thin and it needed more substance besides “we have to capture the killer ghost” scenario. Other than that the suspense was on point, there was a lot of action-packed moments, and I loved the incredible attention to detail in the set design and costumes. It completely immersed the viewer in that era. If you looking for a thriller-esque movie, try this one out.

Beauty

Though these may be just plain black sheet masks on the inside (how cool would it be to have Villian prints on the mask too?!), the packaging is so cool! These masks are so soothing and pretty inexpensive too. A great gift for a Disney fan!

Music

Good Evening by SHINee

My boys are back with their The Story of Light album! Good Evening is part electro, part synth pop and it has such a smooth sound. Like all other SHINee tracks all the members harmonize well with one another while also standing apart from the rest. I miss Jonghyun dearly and I love that they pay homage to him on some of the album tracks. This is a great summer song!

Human Nature by Madonna

My friend and I were shopping in a downtown area and immediately our heads were boppin’ to the beat. This is the first I’ve heard of this Madonna track, but it’s incredibly catchy and I love the R&B sound. It gives me the 90’s TLC sound that I love to hear.

  1. Oh man, I gotta make time to go see Incredibles 2. The first one is my favorite Pixar movie — which is very hard to make a decision about because there are so many good ones — and I’ve heard almost entirely good stuff about the second one too.
