My Favorite Things: July

My Favorite Things is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. I hope you enjoy these personal picks!

Movies

Nope

Two siblings who run a California horse ranch discover something wonderful and sinister in the skies above, while the owner of an adjacent theme park tries to profit from the mysterious, otherworldly phenomenon.

Nope is the second Jordan Peele feature film I’ve seen since Get Out (I still need to watch Us). Though it has mixed reviews, I loved it. Like Get Out, Nope is a film full of symbolism and the smallest details giving it rewatch ability. You could watch the film multiple times and still find something new or meaning to take away from it. It’s hard to discuss the film without giving out spoilers but I would recommend it. As a horror film genre fan, this film felt very original and fresh (especially in an era of reboots and copycat films). It made me think a lot and there were a couple of jump scares and scenes that had me spooked. For me, Keke Palmer stole the show with her acting and character. The comedy mixed into the narrative was also entertaining. I look forward to re-watching this film again.

TV

In disguise as her friend, Ha-ri shows up on a blind date to scare away her friend’s prospective suitor. However, plans go awry when he turns out to be Ha-ri’s CEO and he makes a proposal.

All the K-Drama fans have been raving about this cute and comedic drama, so I decided to give it a watch. I’m only halfway through the 12-episode show and I’m enjoying it so far. I haven’t read the original webtoon it is based on so I’m not sure how close it compares. It’s funny, entertaining, and wacky as it plays on a lot of common K-Drama tropes. The casting is key in this show and Kim Sejong as the lead really charms the audience. And Ahn Hyo-Seop as the male lead is so handsome. Every episode is enjoyable to watch and it’s a show that makes me laugh out loud.

YouTube

Clay Attraction

I recently mentioned in a previous month of My Favorite Things, that I’ve been into diorama DIYs. One art-based channel I recently found and adore is Clay Attraction. She is a Korean Youtuber that re-creates memorable characters and scenes through the medium of clay. She is so incredibly talented and her sculptures are so detailed that they look incredibly lifelike. It’s so amazing to see the work in process and her videos are so soothing to watch.

Why You Still Remember Good Burger So Well

One of my favorite films growing up in the 90s was Good Burger. I used to watch All That and Kenan & Kel all of the time. This film was so memorable to me from the food, music score, and characters. Jordan’s channel covers a lot of nostalgic media, and I appreciated this video so much. He discusses why this film had such a big impact on the 90s kids and even a bit of the production process that went into making this movie.

Why Do We Love Sped Up Songs

Mic The Snare is a channel that focuses on music as a whole and deep dives of artists/album. This is a quick but interesting video about the current trend of sped up songs that’s become popular on social media. My take? I think we enjoy these sped-up versions because of the fun memories or vibe associated with the song.

Music

Tell Me The Truth by FireCity Funk

I discovered this song through Spotify but apparently, it went viral through TikTok? The song was first written and recorded in 1978 but remained unreleased until 2022 when it became the subject of a viral TikTok video by the son of Curly Smith, who co-wrote the song and provided its vocals. It’s a fantastic song if you like funk & soul tracks. I love to listen to this track when I’m driving and need an upbeat song.

Lemons (feat. Kennedi) by Shawn Wasabi, kennedi

Shawn Wasabi is always coming out with a good pop song that you can vibe to, and Lemons is one of those tracks. It’s such a catchy tune that will have you moving along.  It gives an overall summer music feeling.

Sucker For That Love by Robin Packalen, SAAY

SAAY is an artist that I follow in K-Pop since her departure from the short-lived group, Evol. My friend introduced me to her solo works and collaborations, and they are so good. Robin and SAAY have great energy on this track and their voices really shine on this song.
