My Favorite Things: July

My Favorite Things” is a monthly segment where I share my personal and current favorites in seasonal products, health & beauty, food, decor, movies, TV, and more. Hope you enjoy these personal picks!

TV

Trigger Warning With Killer Mike

Grammy-winning rapper Killer Mike uses his fame to serve as an activist, hoping to bring to light and confront important social issues, especially those that impact the black community. On “Trigger Warning,” Killer Mike — whose real name is Michael Render — examines cultural taboos and allows viewers to examine the “what ifs” and “why nots” that limit how people operate in the world.

Trigger Warning is a show that’s been sitting on my queue for a long while. When I had some downtime while cleaning (since I really haven’t watched much TV lately) and I turned it on and was pleasantly surprised. Each episode is based around a different social issue and Mike takes the topics head-on to show how they affect people and ways they could be improved. It’s satirical and humorous while still being very serious about bringing awareness to issues that need to be fixed. It was eye-opening and I learned a lot from what I’ve watched so far. I have yet to finish Season One, but I still recommend this show.

Podcasts

Thank You For Asking

Thank You For Asking is hosted by Amber Burns, a writer and content creator who passionately believes in the power of community. Knowledge shouldn’t be exclusive. We all deserve access to the answers that make life better. Amber doesn’t have the blueprint, but she’s willing to ask the questions.

If you like calmer podcasts with one on one interviews Thank You For Asking is a podcast you should check out. The show covers a variety of topics and the guest is usually a part of that industry or discussion for the episode theme. Amber’s podcast is so soothing due to the tone of her voice and I love the candid conversations that arise within the episodes. My favorite episode so far was one about bookish content creators and the discussion surrounding some of the issues and perks of this realm of content creation.

Youtube

Jade The Libra

I’m a bit of a Halloween enthusiast so I’ve really enjoyed watching Jade’s spooky content of Halloween decor, hunting for new releases of 2021, and how to create your Halloween aesthetic in your home. Her videos are fun, laidback, and lively.

How Do We Talk About The Cosby Show? A Retrospective

I came across this video at work recently as I really love listening/watching retrospectives and critiques of past media. Though this is a long video I found it to be informative because I learned a lot of new things in the creation process of a show I grew up watching. I thought Jose’s personal and scholarly critiques mentioned were very interesting and how we now interact with the show’s legacy after all that has happened with Bill Cosby. If anyone has more recommendations of channels that do retrospectives, I’d like to hear your suggestions.

Music

Never Forget You – Noisettes

This singer reminds me of VV Brown and Duffy all meshed up into one singer. I love the doo-wop/soulful vibe of the music which also has a bit of a pop sound. The female vocalist has a raspy tone that fits perfectly with this song. A good retro-sounding track!

Only One by Gallant

As a huge K-pop fan, I love hearing covers of notable songs. This cover was done as a celebration of Boa’s anniversary in the music industry. This is a nice and smooth R&B style cover of Only One, one of my favorite BoA tracks. Gallant’s voice is perfect for this song!

Girlfriends – Boys World

This song by Boys World exudes girl power to the max! It’s so refreshing to see a girl group that is diverse and also is reminiscent of the girl groups I grew up with in the 90s. The MV has bright and colorful cinematography that matches the overall tone of the song. Also, I love the choreography!

  1. Girlfriends is so much fun! Thanks. And that NF series sounds great; I’ve added it to my queue. Looks like he gets into some of the nuance, which I enjoy. In July I started reading Joanne Ramos The Farm and Nadine Matheson’s The Jigsaw Man, while taking a week off, and I was really enjoying them. I’ve got a bunch of other books in my stack that I can’t set aside just now, but my thoughts keep drifting to these compelling mystery/suspense/spec fic stories.

    1. You’re welcome! That song is on repeat on my music playlist currently. I hope you like the Netflix series. Crossing my fingers for a second season renewal. Happy reading and hope you find some good picks in August! 🙂
