My Favorite Things 2021: Movies

Today, I’m talking about my favorite movies that I watched in 2021. You would think that I would have watched newer releases being at home so much this year. I actually spent most of the year catching up on older movies and re-waiting old favorites that I’ve seen a million times. This year’s list will be very small as I consumed very little amounts of movie watching at all. Here is a compilation of films that made the top of my favorites list.

Synopsis: Teenage elf brothers Ian and Barley embark on a magical quest to spend one more day with their late father. Like any good adventure, their journey is filled with cryptic maps, impossible obstacles and unimaginable discoveries. But when dear Mom finds out her sons are missing, she teams up with the legendary manticore to bring her beloved boys back home.

As always, Pixar never fails in having a movie that will make me bawl my eyes out and a story filled with so much heart. I loved Onward so much and how it’s not only a journey film but a story about healing from grief and siblings that bond together. The magical elements were really exciting to see and I loved the unique spin on a world with many mythical creatures and items. It was packed with many action sequences which were balanced out with quieter moments of Ian and Barley opening up to each other as brothers and also coping with their overall grief. It was one emotional rollercoaster, but a film with a lot of heart.

Young Katie Mitchell embarks on a road trip with her proud parents, younger brother and beloved dog to start her first year at film school. But their plans to bond as a family soon get interrupted when the world’s electronic devices come to life to stage an uprising. With help from two friendly robots, the Mitchells must now come together to save one another — and the planet — from the new technological revolution.

If you’re looking for an entertaining but feel-good movie, The Mitchells vs The Machines deliverers on that. The story follows a family trying to reconnect during a takeover from electronic devices on a global scale. The Mitchells are such a loveable family due to their wacky antics but that’s what makes the viewer fall in love with them. Each member of the family is so uniquely themselves and their bond is stronger because of it. Watching them take on robots and save everyone was so much fun. Most of all you can tell this film has a lot of heart and makes some great commentary on the relationship with have with social media/electronic devices in today’s world. I think viewers can see themselves in the Mitchell family and there are a lot of relatable themes that resonate with the audience.

A prominent paranormal journalist named Kobayashi goes missing shortly after completing a documentary. What begins as an investigation into strange noises soon evolves into the chilling mystery of a demonic entity named Kagutaba.

Two weeks after watching this film and I am still unsettled (which means the director did his job right). This is probably the scariest horror film I’ve seen all year and I think it will give any viewer thrills and chills. This film pop up on numerous must-watch J-Horror film lists and it definitely deserves the high ranking it gets for all of the typical but unique horror elements used in the film. Following a documentary/found footage style theme the film is snippets of interviews, TV clips, and strange occurrences compiled by a journalist to solve a deadly curse. It’s very eerie and the film feels very quiet in a way that makes the audience feel uncomfortable and on edge all of the time. You know something bad is about to happen but you aren’t sure when. A few jump scare moments here and there, but the third act of the film definitely got me the most! It’s a very slow-moving horror film but worth the watch as the elements of suspense keep the viewer hooked into the movie.

In present-day Auradon, Ben, the benevolent teenage son of King Adam and Queen Belle, offers a chance of redemption for the troublemaking offspring of Disney’s classic villains: Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen and Jafar.

Why did no one tell me these films were this good! I binged watched all three Descendants movies in one go. I was shocked by how much I liked it. If I had to rank them I would say the first film had the strongest storyline and the second film had the best songs overall. It was cool to watch a story from the perspective of the Disney villains (which we’re seeing more in recent remakes) and how their lives were affected after the good guys got their happily ever after. They were fun, full of great songs (and spectacular choreography), and were thoroughly entertaining. It’s got the perfect amount of cheesiness and a good dose of the fantasy feel. if you enjoy a good Disney musical, add these films to your watch list.

  1. Favourites? Oh, that’s too hard. I just watched Tick Tick Boom which was good. The B*tch Who Stole Christmas was sooo campy, I just loved it. Ohhh, have you seen Little yet? It was fun (predictable, but good predictable). And I finally finished the last To All the Boys romcom, which was all-of-a-piece with the other two. (You KNOW I’m gonna ignore that Pixar rec, right? ;-))

    1. Haha, Pixar movies are so good, but they always make me cry. I still need to watch the 2nd and 3rd To All The Boys Movies. I haven’t heard of either of the movies you mentioned but they sound interesting!
