July-September Book Haul: Books on Books!

Hello everyone! Welcome to the third book haul of 2019! My reading goal for 150 books for 2019 is going pretty well. I’m a bit behind schedule due to work and life, but I’m getting back on track. I’m finally caught up with all of my Netgalley reads and other review copies. Stay tuned for those reviews!

As far as book buying goes, I’ve done well except for the large order of e-books I bought from Harlequin’s website. I haven’t acquired too many new books which is great because my bookshelves can’t hold anymore books. I did get a new bookshelf so I’m excited to have more shelf space and I’m continuing through reading the books I own.

Onto the book haul!

Bought

Dominicana by Angie Cruz – I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about this book so I chose it as a monthly pick. I wanted to expand my reading to read more books by Latinx authors. (BOTM Pick)

Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore – I love historical fiction and romance books and this one seems like a fun enemies-to-lovers read. (BOTM Pick)

Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia – I enjoy epic fantasy novels and this one seems infused with rich culture and magic. I can’t wait to read it! (BOTM Pick)

Gettin’ Merry by Various Authors – I love a good Holiday anthology! Plus it’s got a story from Beverly Jenkins and it’s one of my favorites!

The Restless Dead by Various Authors – A horror anthology book! I haven’t read one of these in a while, but I always love a good spooky story.

Obasan by Joy Kogawa – This one is a heavier book as it chronicles Canada’s internment of people Japanese descent WW2. But I think it’s important to read narratives like this.

Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye – I’ve heard a lot of good things about this book so I decided to buy it since I enjoyed her most recent novel.

The Elysian Prophecy by Vivien Reis – It looked like a suspenseful read so I picked it up from a used book sale. I haven’t heard much about it, but I hope it’s good!

ARCs/Review Copies

My Totem Came Calling by Blessing Musariri and Thorsten Nesch – This was a short, but good read about growing up and spirit animals. The magical realism aspect really added to the story.

Womentality by Erin Wildermuth (Editor) – Being a freelancer myself I enjoyed this book a lot. It profiles numerous women from a round the globe and their career shifts. (Review)

Escaping Exodus by Nicky Drayden – A far-out Sci-Fi read with a very unique concept. Set in a futuristic world the two main characters involved in sibling rivalry, romance, action, and drama. (Review)

One Night in Georgia by Celeste O. Norfleet – Set in the Civil Rights era, Zelda decides to take a trip to Atlanta by car with her best friends from Spellman College. It was such an immersive reading experience.(Review)

Grace in the Wings by Kari Bovee – I was immediately drawn to the glitz and glamour of showbiz, but also the suspense and mystery in this novel. Reading this novel reminded me of watching Miss Fisher’s Murder Mystery. (Review)

Kingdom of Souls by Rena Barron – This book is definitely going into my top favorites list of this year. This book is enriched in West African culture and has magic, folklore, and is very action-packed! (Review)

Dear Haiti, Love Alaine by Maika & Maritza Moulite – This book was such a fantastic read from start to finish. It paints a vivid portrait of Haiti’s rich culture, people, language, and history. While the story is heartwarming, it’s a bit bittersweet at the same time.  (Review)
