July-September Book Haul: “Am I A Book Collector?” Edition

Hello everyone! Welcome to the third book haul of 2020! This year has been difficult for many, I’m also trying to do my best to take things day by day. It’s been stressful, but I’m trying to find solace in reading in my spare time.

I’ve bought way too many books this time around. I did manage to unhaul a bag of books and take them to a local Little Free Library, but I still need to work on clearing up my shelves and freeing up space. My plan during the winter is to keep focusing on books that I own and trying to unhaul more books. I just don’t have the space!

By requesting less ARCs and review copies this has really helped me to find more reads on my own shelves. I’m sure that I’ll meet my Goodreads goal, but I’m not too sure about my other reading challenges. Only time will tell! Now onto the book haul!

Bought

Scandalous Secrets by Synithia Williams – I’ve been eyeing this author’s books for a while and when I found it on sale I picked it up! I love finding new romance novels.

I Hear The Sunspot by Yuki Fumino – This is a BL manga I picked up for a Romanceopoly prompt. It seems like a very interesting story!

The House That Lou Built by Mae Respicio – Another book from “Feeding Reading” that I got. I love middle grad fiction and I’ve been trying to read more it it.

Darius The Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram – I took advantage of Kellogg’s Feeding Reading Campaign and ended up picking this book. I hear such good things about this one.

The Duke The Lady and a Baby by Vanessa Riley – I read one of Riley’s Regency romances before and I was so impressed by it. This one looks like a lot of fun!

The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino – I got this as a gift and I hear so many interesting things about this author. Apparently they write very good thrillers!

Beloved by Toni Morrison – I am in pursuit of reading more of Morrison’s novels and got this as a gift from my Secret Sister. I’ve seen the movie but never read the book.

They Can’t Kill Us All by Wesley Lowery – I actually found this at Dollar Tree and immediately picked it up. It’s a memoir that delves into the Black Lives Matter movement.

Forbidden by  Kimberley Griffiths Little – A friend Desiree, recommended this on her Bookstagram (check out her YT channel here) and it looks pretty interesting. I like a good historical fiction novel with romance.

Possession by M. Verano – I have seen this author’s books floating around online and wanted to give it a try. Trying to add more spooky reads to my collection.

Slay by Brittany Morris – I love the cover art! Found this book in the bargain section of BAM (Books-A-Million). It sounds interesting. A bit late to the game on pickup up this release but I’m excited to read it.

Daughters of a Nation by Various Authors – Back on Bookstore Romance Day I placed my very first online order at The Ripped Bodice! I ended up buying this and a physical copy I wanted to add to my shelves and read.

Pantsuit Nation by Libby Chamberlain – This is an inspiring collection of stories and photographs that capture what it means to live, work, love, and resist in America. Another Dollar Tree find! Plus I love photography books.

Gifted

Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata – This is a highly anticipated read and a gift from a friend. I’m always trying to read more translated works and I enjoy Japanese fiction.

The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta – Another gift from my friend! This book sounds so good! I’ve read many reviews about it.

Princeless Vol.1 by Whitley  (Author), M. Goodwin (Artist) – I love stories with strong heroines so I was excited to get this as a gift from Secret Sister. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this series.

ARCs/Review Copies

Turning Point by Paula Chase – This novel is a coming of age story that follows two friends, Monique and Rasheeda, who spend a summer apart. This is a coming of age story as much is a tale about friendship and finding yourself. Both girls are put in different situation where they out of place both separated, but are only able to stay connected through text. (Review)

The Story of Mina Lee by Nancy Jooyoun Kim – This book follows Margot who is on her own way back home only to be struck with instant grief. Mina’s mother has passed and Margot struggles to grasp with her death. The story alternates between Mina’s point-of-view of her past, when she started out in America, and trying to adapt to a new life. The present day follows Margot picking up pieces of her mom’s life and trying learn more about her. (Review)

Here to Stay by Adriana Herrera – This novel follows the story of Julia who is a social worker who helps run a non profit program at Sturm’s. When her program is at risk of being cut, she’ll have to do her best to fight to keep it. She has to team up with Rocco, her “enemy” and crush to prove that her program is needed for the community all while not falling for him. (Review)

Miss World 1970 by Jennifer Hosten – This book is about the story of Ms. Hosten’s barrier-breaking win as the first black woman to be crowned Miss World 1970 and her subsequent globe-trotting career as a development worker and diplomat. It sounds so interesting!

The Conductors by Nicole Glover – I literally screamed with joy when I got approved for this Netgalley. I’m hoping to review this soon! The cover art is fantastic. The novel is set in post-civil war Philadelphia and features a magic user who was a conductor on the Underground Railroad.

Smash It by Francina Simone – Smash It follows the story of Olivia who is a girl trying to navigate her way through high school. She decided that this year will be her “year of yes” in order to push herself to try new things and be more confident in herself. So she decides to try out for the school musical along with her friends Dre and Eli (which she has a crush on). Will she be able to conquer her obstacles in her senior year? (Review)

Relentless by Katherine Itacy – Relentless is a thought provoking memoir that follows the author’s journey from her days as training as a National athlete, time as criminal defense lawyer, overcoming obstacles in her life, and living with with a disability. Itacy writes the book like an open diary and I liked how she shared their reflections on the past while looking forward to the future. (Review)
