January-March Book Haul: “New Year, New Books” Edition

Hello 2019! As with last year’s goal of my (somewhat) book buying ban I’m working on buying fewer books, reading more books on my own bookshelves, and trying to obtain some of the newer anticipated reads from my local library. I’ve continued to stick to this goal and slowly but surely, I’m starting to see more results. Fewer books means more shelf space, plus I’ve been able to find really fun reads that were blacklisted on my TBR!

I’m also starting to cut back on request Netgalley arcs, etc. Since getting a new job at the end of last year, my schedule has gotten so much busier, and it’s even harder to find more time to read than before. I did sign up for the Book of The Month subscription box, so I’ve very excited about all the new books I’ve discovered through it. On top of that, February was my birthday month so I was able to treat myself which you’ll see in this haul, but I didn’t go overboard as in previous years, lol.

Now onto the book haul!

Bought

On the Come Up by Angie Thomas- This is my pick for February’s BOTM (Book of the Month) box. I loved her previous novel THUG, so I can’t to see what’s in store for this book!

The Night Tiger by Yangzee Choo – This was my January Pick for BOTM. I won’t lie and say this wasn’t a cover buy, but isn’t the artwork gorgeous?! I really like Historical Fiction so this one sounds like something I would like.

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang – This was a add-on pick for January’s BOTM box. Being an avid Romance reader, I’ve heard a lot of good feedback about this book and it sounds like an interesting Contemporary Romance.

Stepping on Roses Vol. 1-6 by Rinko Ueda – I bought 6 out of 9 (series total) volumes of this manga as a birthday present because I wanted to do a re-read of this series. It’s a fun Historical Romance with an enemies-to-lovers trope.

ARCs/Review Copies

The Unhooneymooners by Christina Lauren – I was beyond elated to get this Netgalley as I’ve recently become a huge fan of this author’s works. This book was one big hilarious rom com! Stay tuned for the review which will be posted this month.

The Wrythe and The Reckoning by Yvonthia Meredith Leland – This is a book that I had high hopes for since the synopsis was so intriguing, but the story fell a bit flat for me. See review here.

Quest and Quandaries (Floating Isles #1) by Alda Yuan – This novel was a purely fun adventure story full of magical lands, wizards, and a dangerous quest. See my full review here.

Death’s Dancer (Grace Bloods #1) by Jasmine Silvera – This paranormal fantasy novel had and intense romance on top of its interesting concept of godsdancers which I thoroughly enjoyed. See full review here.

Becoming Beatriz by Tami Charles – I loved Charles’ previous novel Like Vanessa and her lyrical writing style so I wanted to check out her newest release as well. Stay tuned for a book review soon.

Mistress of The Ritz by Melanie Benjamin – I enjoy a good Historical Fiction novel and this book and this book tells the story of e American woman who secretly worked for the French Resistance during World War II.

Natalie Tan’s Book of Luck & Fortune by Roselle Lim – How gorgeous is this cover art? This story is centered around a young woman finding family in the most unexpected places Keep an eye out for a review of this book in May.

I Am Yours by Reema Zaman – Memoirs are becoming of my favorite types of non-fiction to read because the very open personal narratives. This is one of my many current reads and I’m enjoying it thoroughly. A review will be posted soon!

Enlightenment by Reno Ursal – This book is the first installment in the Bathala Series, which is an interesting take on modern-day vampires. Review to come later this week.

One Week of You by Lisa Williams Kline – A YA Contemporary novel about growing up, finding yourself and navigating high school. Read my full review here.

Reclaiming Our Space by Feminista Jones – I can’t wait to read and review this thought-provoking novel about feminism in today’s society!

  1. I got On the Come Up too. I bought it couple weeks ago because someone mentioned it references lots of rap/hip hop music so I want to read it for that. Haven’t tried her previous book yet.

  2. Ooooo I’ve been keeping my eye on The Night Tiger… it just sounds so unique! Interested in seeing what you think when you get to it 🙂

I just finished The Girls in the Picture by Melanie Benjamin and loved it! I was asked to read and review Mistress of The Ritz too, but I’m just so burnt out of WWII historical fiction… I guess I’ll see what you think 🙂

    1. Hopefully I’ll have a review up for The Night Tiger Soon! I do have a review of Mistress of the Ritz coming up soon and I’m looking forward to it. I’ve been reading a ton of contemporary lately, so I need to balance it out with some historical fiction.
