Favorite Non-Bookish Podcasts Vol. 4

Hello readers! I love listening to podcasts at work, at home, and while on the go. I talked about some of the bookish podcasts that I listen to in the past, but today I thought I would share some of my favorite non-bookish podcasts with you. I hope you enjoy these picks!

Join hosts Anney and Samantha to listen to Stuff Mom Never Told You, continuing the conversation of what it is to identify as female through research-based discussion around feminism and how it impacts everyday life.

I remember finding out about this podcast through Instagram and I’m so glad I decided to add it to my podcast list! The hosts Anney and Samantha manage to cover so many topics on this podcast through the lens of feminism. From historical figures, friendship breakups, and even spooky urban legends they talk about anything and everything. It’s entertaining because it’s like a conversation between two friends and I always come away from the podcast learning something new.

What’s CODE SWITCH? It’s the fearless conversations about race that you’ve been waiting for. Hosted by journalists of color, our podcast tackles the subject of race with empathy and humor. We explore how race affects every part of society — from politics and pop culture to history, food and everything in between. This podcast makes all of us part of the conversation — because we’re all part of the story.

Code Switch is an enlightening and engaging podcast that discusses race amongst multiple lenses. I like that each episode covers an issue in-depth without being overly lengthy (time-wise). It’s a podcast I like to listen to on the drive home from work and the hosts always keep the listener in tune with each conversation. I appreciate that it gets to the nitty-gritty of topics and invites people outside of the hosts to reflect on their own personal experiences with each topic.

Thank You For Asking is hosted by Amber Burns, a writer and content creator who passionately believes in the power of community. Knowledge shouldn’t be exclusive. We all deserve access to the answers that make life better. Amber doesn’t have the blueprint, but she’s willing to ask the questions.

If you like calmer podcasts with one-on-one interviews, Thank You For Asking is a podcast you should check out. The show covers a variety of topics and the guest is usually a part of that industry or discussion for the episode theme. Amber’s podcast is so soothing due to the tone of her voice and I love the candid conversations that arise within the episodes. One of my favorite episodes so far was one about bookish content creators and the discussion surrounding some of the downsides and perks in the realm of content creation.

In each episode, Sailor Moon Fan Club host Victoria L. Johnson interviews incredible fans of the ’90s anime including bestselling authors, comic book and manga creators, influencers, musicians, and more.

Being a Sailor Moon fan from a young age, this podcast was a fun find for me! Sailor Moon was one of my first exposures to anime when I didn’t realize what anime was as a child. I like that each episode features a new guest that gushes about their favorite moments of the anime but also gets to chat openly about their careers. It’s always fun to see people coming together because of fandom and I think this podcast is a great blend of Sailor Moon and pop culture as a whole.

Cabinet of Curiosities is an audio tour of the unbelievable, the unsettling, and the bizarre. Each episode features two short tales about the most amazing things found in the pages of history.

If you enjoy history and more of a short-form podcast format, then Cabinet of Curiosities may be for you. I’m already a big fan of Mahnke’s podcast Lore and decided to check this show out. It’s great for finding out little nuggets of strange history and unexplained mysteries (as well as stuff that is just plain weird). The short episode run time is great for listening on the go or when you want a podcast that is not too lengthy. And as always there’s something about the narration style that is calm yet whimsical!

  1. Code Switch is a long-time listen of mine although I’ve gotten even more attached to Still Processing which has a similar vibe but sometimes feels a little more like a conversation, albeit a smart and organized conversation. Hehe
I also love Elvis Mitchell’s half-hour In Treatment interviews, film-related but he knows the interviewees’ work so well that history and cultural stuff comes into the convo naturally. I also like listening to Questlove’s podcasts but I have to listen to them when I’m wide awake and not just before bed because they laugh too much!
