Today’s Topic: The Official Spooky Season Book Tag

Found At: TheArtsyReader

1: You hear a strange noise in the night – the monsters got inside! Which book character would you choose to protect you from harm?

The main character, Charity, is true final girl material in this novel. I could rely on her to help me in a scary survival situation.

2: You go on vacation and your hotel is located right next to a cemetery. Which book character do you really hope is not hiding in the shadows?

The deer itself is sounds like nightmare fuel and Barrow uses this horror trope in order to convey the true terror lying in plain sight.

3: It’s a particularly cold night and you decide to stay inside. Which three book characters would you like to spend a trivia quiz and board game night with?

I grew to love the rag-tag “Scooby gang” (as the characters call themselves) and though they come together from different magical factions they develop a strong friendship. They would be fun to hang out with.

4: Time for a big adventure! The scary book you pick transports you into its world. Where do you end up?

Set in an abandoned asylum the contestants of a horror competition find out they have stepped into the world of a mad man’s (Jack Stanley) creation and have to escape before it’s too late. I would hate to be in this, more likely I wouldn’t even sign up for something like this.

5: No Halloween without Trick or Treat-ing! Which book character do you think has the sweetest tooth?

Both of the Clarke sisters (who are main characters in this duology both have a sweet tooth!

6: The fairies are angry and want a sacrifice from your bookshelf. Which scary book has to go and why?

It took me a while to figure what was actually happening in the story because a lot of things are alluded to but not described on page. It left me a bit confused at times. I wish the plot lines were wrapped up a bit more cleanly to make for a easier reading experience.

7: You decide you feel more autumnal rather than halloween-y today. Which book setting would you choose for a more cosy and less scary vibe?

This graphic novel is a perfect cozy seasonal read for its middle grade audience and above. I love the Easter eggs of notable horror media references in the illustrations and the plot. It a story about overcoming obstacles with supernatural creatures, but also healing from the past.

8: The witch is cooking up a spell in her cauldron and you have to add one magic ingredient. Which item from a book are you adding to the mixture?

I honestly don’t know. Can I add an ingredient to make the spell taste decent?

9: You get to decide which bookish place to visit for Halloween. Which book setting is the scariest – and gets crossed off the list?

This novel can best be described as “uncanny valley”. The definition of that phrase refers to the region of negative emotional response towards robots that seem “almost” human. In this novel’s the uncanny valley effect in the “science” and experiments that are discovered within The Orchard.

10: The big day is finally here: it’s Halloween! Which book character do you dress up as, and what would be part of your outfit?

I have always wanted to do a Madeline costume, because I thought her outfit was cute and chic!
