Today’s Topic: Winter-themed Book Tag

Found At: Zezee With Books

Falling Snow: The colors of winter are muted. Choose a book that has whites, light blues, and grays on the cover.

Hard Knocks is a story of a love that blooms between a neurologist and a hockey player who is brought together over a public debate. Though they hit things off immediately with an “attraction at first sight” scenario Lang takes time to backtrack and work on the complexities of their relationship. Hockey is something that pulls the two together, but also tears them apart. I liked that the story also touched on other topics such as race, sports injuries, and caring for aging parents.

Crackling Fires: Colder weather makes for the perfect time to sit by a crackling fire in the fireplace. What book is the best to curl up next to a warm fire with?

I recommend The Plot is Murder if you like books about books. The main character is an aspiring writer who opens up a local bookshop in her community. A nice added touch is that readers get to read the British cozy mystery novel that Samantha (the MC) is creating in the story. You get double the mystery and that adds to the fun of the novel.

Ice Storm: Winter storms can be brutal. What book do you love that takes the characters through a brutal season?

In Piece by Piece, though the main character, Nisrin, goes through something traumatic that will shape the rest of her life she is incredibly resilient and strong. Even though she goes through a process of healing the novel felt realistic because she has a way to go with the journey even after the novel ends.  The watercolor-esque styles features in the artwork are as memorable as the story.

Winter Wishes: Spending more time indoors allows for more time to dream and wish. What character is living a life that you dream about?

Happily Ever Afters follows Tessa, a budding writer who loves to create stories. She obtains an amazing opportunity to be in a prestigious art school only for her to experience a bad case of writer’s block. On top of this, she struggles to deal with living in a new town away from her best friend Caroline, adjusting to a new school, a love interest, and trying to find her artistic voice. I felt that as a writer could relate to Tessa’s experience on many levels and I wished I could attend an art school just like her!

Hot Cocoa: There is nothing like a hot cup of cocoa during the winter, as adults we often under estimate it. What book do you think should be the next big thing?

City of Secrets is vividly stunning with its grand illustrations and thriller elements. So much so that reading the novel felt like watching a movie. This graphic novel was an exciting page-turner, and it appeals to people who love solving mysteries and piecing together literal puzzles. I loved the main characters, Ever, and Hannah, who end up becoming fast friends throughout the story. I never hear people gush about this graphic novel and I want more people to read it!

Lip Balm and Lotion: Soothing dry skin is part of the winter for many. What book is full of soothing & comforting words?

I love to read stories involving food because they can be warmhearted, complicated, and emotional. Our Dining Table delivers on these very three elements. Yutaka is a person who loves to cook but due to his past, he struggles to share in the joys of eating with others. It’s a story full of overcoming your past and finding comfort in food and life’s simple moments.

Peppermint Mocha: What is your go to winter food or drink for those reading marathons of winter?

I love to drink herbal teas, especially in the colder months. My current go-to tea flavor is I l Love Lemon Tea by Bigelow.

  1. I enjoyed reading your answers to these prompts! Your description of Our Dining Table reminded me of Bryan Washington’s Family Meal, one of my favourites from 2023. Does the mystery that the narrator in The Plot is Murder is writing end up overlapping with the novel’s story itself? That’s fun, when that happens. My current favourite tea is Lemongrass Ginger. Here…I’ll pour a cup for you!

    1. Um for the The Plot is Murder the timelines are a bit different in the first novel. I’ll have to see if the two storylines converge in the rest of the series.
