Today’s Topic: What Makes Me Pick Up a Book

Created By: Wonderfully Bookish

Do you judge a book by its cover?

Honestly, yes. When I’m walking past a display of books or perusing through various titles, I always keep an eye for eye-catching colors.

Focusing just on the cover, what attracts you to pick it up?

Usually, my favorite colors, something that is bright, has intricate designs, or has a cool illustration on the cover.

Do you read the synopsis first, or prefer to go in without knowing anything about the book?

Usually, I read the synopsis first. I very rarely go into a book without any prior knowledge. Guess I’ve been burned by too many bad books.

Do you have any auto-buy authors – authors whose books you will always buy, even without knowing anything about them?

Yes, I have a few such as Alyssa Cole, Hiromu Arakawa, Akiko Higashimura, Phoebe Robinson, Jeannie Lin, B.B. Alston, Beverly Jenkins, and so many more!

Are you more likely to pick up a book if it includes specific elements/themes? (e.g. LGBTQ+, mental health rep, disability rep, etc)

Sometimes. It depends on my reading mood. I usually like to look for books based on a theme when I want to learn more about a topic or my interest is sparked by a monthly celebration/awareness (ex. Black History Month). I diversify my books as much as possible, so I like to read about multiple topics at the same time.

Do you ever read a book that has generally negative reviews just to form your own opinion of it?

Not too much. I have my own set TBR. There are books I’ve enjoyed and some people have given it two-star ratings online.

Do you ever buy a book just because another BookTuber or book blogger has reviewed it or talked about it a lot?

Sometimes I have. If it’s a blogger/reader friend, I am always checking out what they’re reading. I follow a lot of people that share the same reading tastes as well as those that cover genres that are out of my reading comfort zone. I’m always willing to read new and exciting novels.

Is there anyone whose book recommendations you will generally always trust?

Close friends and family for sure (this also includes blogger, insta, and pen pal buddies too). They haven’t let me down before.
