Secrets and lies: a book set in a sleepy small town

In this dark thriller, the main character Nearly is a high schooler that tries to solve the case of serial killer on the loose who is leaving cryptic ads in the newspaper. The thrill of the chase is what puts you on edge while reading this book and the mystery was interesting to put together in this small town mystery.

Salt and sand: a book with a beach-side community

Rosa comes from a small coastal town where the community is a tight knit and everyone looks out for one another. When the town, Port Coral, is in danger they decide to put together a fundraiser where everyone pitches in.Port Coral sounds like coziest marina town to visit. It’s small, quaint, friendly, and full of vivid scenery.

Here there be dragons: a book with a voyage on the high seas

This is a fun book that has adventures on sea and on land. Mix in a inexperienced governess and a group of unruly girls and you have a bunch of interesting antics and embarrassing mishaps. It’s a romance that has passion and heart. You know where the story is headed, but it’s still nice to get that HEA at the end of the book.

Tread lightly: a book set down a murky river or a jungle

What I love most about this book is that it is such an immersive reading experience. Barron creates a world different from our own. From the beginning to the end the reader is just pulled into the story. You can picture the greenery of the forest/jungles, the, massive temples, local shops, the tribal outfits, and more.

Frozen wastes: a book with a frost-bitten atmosphere

The Quality of Silence is a high-action novel that is filled with suspense and mystery. A mother and daughter set out on a risky journey into unknown land in order to save a loved one that is presumed dead. The writing is detailed and offers readers a vivid descriptions of the picturesque beauty and the unforgiving cruelty of Alaska’s landscape.

The boonies: a book with ruff or isolated terrain

The Undertaking of Lily Chen follows a man named Deshi whose brother suddenly dies. His parents fear for Wei in the afterlife and don’t want him to journey there alone so they send him on a quest to find a ghost bride. On the journey Deshi travels through rough terrain and varying landscapes on his quest.

Hinterlands and cowboys: a book with a western-esque setting

Carson did a fantastic job of researching the Gold Rush era in this series, and its reflected in the details of her writing. Not only is she creating this tale about this magical girl who has the power to seek out gold, but she also manages to educate her readers on the clothes, food, transportation, and events of that period.

Look lively: a book set across sweeping desert sands

Rebel of the Sands tells the tale of a fierce heroine named Amani who wants a better life than what is presented for her in the town of Dustlook.  While Amani’s world seems like an exciting place, we are also quickly reminded (by certain events) of how deadly and dangerous deserts can be.

Wild and untamed: a book set in the heart of the woods

In Red’s world there are people that are many travelers and hunters on the road prepared to take on danger and they’re also government camps (quarantines) set up to protect people against this infectious disease. Red lives in a somewhat rural area that is surrounded by trees and far away from the city.

Wildest dreams: a whimsical book shrouded in magic

What drew me to this novel is the folklore aspect. I enjoy reading tales of faraway lands and magic. This story has so many good fantasy aspects: a cursed sword, demon slayers, monsters, mystic shrines, and more.
