There wasn’t just one novel that started my love for books since I liked reading from a very young age. One series that fostered my love for books and fostered a love of historical fiction was the American Girl novels. It was so interesting to read about girls my age through different time periods.

This was such a good contemporary romance novel! From the cast of characters to the romance, humor, and sweet tender moments. Each of the main characters showed smooth character development too. I adored it all and appreciated it’s discussion of interracial relationships.

I used to be a big fan of this series back in the day. Reflecting on it now as an adult, I realize how problematic it was. One of my main things I disliked about the books is that the series seemed to go on past it’s peak but the MC was a bit wishy-washy. It got to a point where I just DNF’d the series because I didn’t even care what happened anymore.

Morganville Vampires!!!! This series was so nostalgic for me since it opened me up to reading paranormal/fantasy series as a teen. I know it had 10 books in total, but I still didn’t want the story to end. I should do a re-read of these books since it’s been so long since I picked up these books.

The Sailor Moon graphic novels! It reminds of the days when I used to get up early on the weekends for Saturday cartoon blocks. It also reminded me of how I started watching anime as a young child before I became of fan of anime. It really helped spark a love of animation for me.

I love Samatha’s blog and this was the first book of essays I read from her. I don’t think I was necessarily going through a rough patch in my life but this book was a pick me up. I love her candid nature in the topics she discusses plus she’s very open about struggling with mental health. Most importantly these essays remind you that it’s okay not to be okay.

I could relate to some parts of Olivia’s character since I’m a shy and anxious person by nature. It helped me to realize that I needed to continue to work harder on stepping out of my comfort zone and trying new things.

  1. It’s hard to think of choosing just one book that got you hooked on reading. Also, for a lot of us, the books that we loved when we were younger are, when we examine them now, fit into the category you’ve mentioned in another of your answers–problematic. LOL But, like you, series, just series in general, were a big part of my getting hooked. One thing to enjoy a standalone story, but it was series that pulled me back time and again, always yearning for more time with my favourite friends (errrr, I mean characters, because I guess they weren’t real after all). We didn’t have American Girl here but there’s a series called Dear Canada which worked the same way, but I loved more magical stories when I was a kid, the Oz books and other less-well-known series that were formulaic but I loved them anyway.

    1. Same here! Magical stories were the best when was a kid and still seek them out today. Series have always been the types o books to keep me coming back for more. Even when they’re formulaic. It’s inetresting to look back and reflect on how differently about the books I enojyed when I ws younger. I love the memories but it sucks when you do realize how problematic it turns out to be.

  2. Enjoyed the post. Had a similar reaction to House of Night. Think I stopped after book 3. I didn’t remember much besides the villainous indigenous characters and demonizing women’s sexuality. Read a blogpost to refresh my memory and yikes. Sounds like it’s for the best that I didn’t stick it out.

    1. I think I read about 6 books of the series. Aside from the toxic stuff mentioned, it was so repetitive and the story was so stretched out it felt like it was never going anywhere.
