Genre: Romance, Contemporary, Fiction

Page Length: 368 pages (hardcover edition)

Synopsis:

Chloe Brown is a chronically ill computer geek with a goal, a plan, and a list. After almost—but not quite—dying, she’s come up with seven directives to help her “Get a Life”, and she’s already completed the first: finally moving out of her glamorous family’s mansion. The next items?

Enjoy a drunken night out.
• Ride a motorcycle.
• Go camping.
• Have meaningless but thoroughly enjoyable sex.
• Travel the world with nothing but hand luggage.
• And… do something bad.

But it’s not easy being bad, even when you’ve written step-by-step guidelines on how to do it correctly. What Chloe needs is a teacher, and she knows just the man for the job.

Redford ‘Red’ Morgan is a handyman with tattoos, a motorcycle, and more sex appeal than ten-thousand Hollywood heartthrobs. He’s also an artist who paints at night and hides his work in the light of day, which Chloe knows because she spies on him occasionally. Just the teeniest, tiniest bit.

But when she enlists Red in her mission to rebel, she learns things about him that no spy session could teach her. Like why he clearly resents Chloe’s wealthy background. And why he never shows his art to anyone. And what really lies beneath his rough exterior… (description from Goodreads)

Review:

This was a highly anticipated read since I’ve heard so much about this novel since it has been released. Right from the beginning, the story had me laughing. I loved Hibbert’s humor style in this book and the wide side remarks/jokes cracked me up. This was was the first Hibbert I’ve read and I instantly got hooked into her writing style. She takes great care in creating multi-layered characters that are entertaining, relatable, and represent people from different walks of life.

Chloe’s life changes when she has a near-death experience and it spurs her to take herself out of her comfort zone. And though her journey is about falling in love, it’s also her story of self-discovery and pushing boundaries. Meeting Red helps Chloe to be more adventurous, but a lot that growth comes from within. The same goes for Red who is scarred from his abusive ex-girlfriend and struggles to heal from the past and find passion in his art again. Chloe helps to spark joy in his life and help him to realize that he may need help to move on and push himself to further his career.

I loved Chloe and Red together and the progression of their relationship. Their small quips at each other were very funny and I liked how sweet they were. They look out for one another and share a lot of quiet moments where they bond and try to navigate their past that haunts them. While the book is cute, it’s also equally steamy in the romance department as well.

I enjoyed Chloe’s sisters and her eccentric family and I’m, looking forward to meeting the other Brown sisters in the rest of series and more of Hibbert’s novels.

    1. I think the steamy scenes is what makes the romance! But I totally understand. I think Hibbert’s romance is more on the steamy side of the romance genre.

  1. Enjoyed the review. If Hibbert’s romances are a good mix of humorous, I should check one out. Looking for something lighthearted.

    1. I appreciated that it was a rom-com that also manages to discuss serious issues. Hibbert manages to keep it balanced so I felt like it wasn’t too heavy. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
