My Favorite Things 2025: Movies

Today, I’m talking about my favorite movies that I watched in 2025. You would think that I would have watched even more newer releases this year, but I usually spend most of the year catching up on older movies and re-waiting old favorites that I’ve seen a million times. I managed to watch a decent amount of 2025 releases this year. Here are some of the films that made the top of my favorites list.

One of Them Days

When her boyfriend takes her rent money, Alyssa and her roommate race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact.

It’s been a while since I’ve been wanting to go to the theatres to see a comedy that didn’t feel like a “bro” movie. This movie was a wild, and fun ride from beginning to end. It’s a feel-good movie that doesn’t take itself to seriously and most of all it centers Black voices. SZA and Keke Palmer do a great job of feeding off each’s other energy on screen and playing the roles of two besties desperate to achieve their goals. The film offers a lot of cameos of familiar faces and lots of comedic moments that had that theatre laughing out loud.

Love Hurts

Marvin is a Milwaukee realtor who receives a crimson envelope from Rose, a former partner-in-crime whom he left for dead. He now finds himself thrust back into a world of ruthless hit men and double-crosses that turn his open houses into deadly war zones. Hunted by his brother, a volatile crime lord, Marvin must confront the choices that haunt him and the history he never truly buried.

If you’re looking a corny Valentine’s Day movie mixed with action-packed scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat this film is it! Ke Hey Quan was amazing as the lead in this role. I’ve only watched him as a child in The Goonies so it was cool to see his fighting skills in action on the big screen. I appreciated that the film was suspenseful while also making me laugh out loud at the goofy bits. It’s a blend of unique visuals and oddball comedy!

Sinners

Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their Mississippi hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

There is so many layers to this film from the cinematography, metaphors, and dialogue. While I was firmly glued to the screen in the theater along with the rest of the crowd, this is a film you can re-watch and still catch smaller details you may have missed the first watch. Sinners is one of my top movies of 2025 and I think Coogler did a fantastic job of encapsulating so much in this piece. I enjoyed the action-packed scenes, supernatural effects, and the commentary on race and cultural diaspora. The film as its been described by critics is a solid blend of Horror and Historical Realism. A recommended must watch!

K-Pop Demon Hunters

A world-renowned K-Pop girl group balance their lives in the spotlight with their secret identities as demon hunters.

I am obsessed with this film! I remember hearing about it when it was development and it turned out to be so good. I am excited to see more original animated films instead of existing IPs and reboots. The soundtrack was great (and I have the tracks on repeat) and I loved the animation style and story. It’s a meaningful story that blends Korean culture with universal emotions that anyone can relate to. I had so much fun picking out the K-Pop and K-drama Easter eggs placed in the film too. I would be amped if they made a sequel for this film.

Weapons

When all but one child from the same classroom mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.

I didn’t watch Cregger’s previous film Barbarian, going into this film, but I was familiar with his style. Still I didn’t know what to expect despite seeing lots of promo for this film. It a was dark, gritty, comedic, sometimes weird horror movie. I feel that it was a standout movie in 2025 among the other releases I’ve seen this year. Though it takes inspiration from horror tropes, it manages to be a very original concept. I think the story has very strong storytelling and I loved the acting. I was still left confused by some parts of the film after watching it, but I heard there will be a sequel in the future?

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios’ ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing as they face their most daunting challenge yet.

I’m a casual fan of Marvel films, so it has been a long time since I watched one in theatres. But I was very excited about the reboot of Fantastic Four since I enjoyed the previous films/stories so much. This film was not only action-packed and exciting, but also I also appreciated the detail to the setting of the 1960s and showcasing the Space Race of that era. I think the chemistry between the cast what was what made the film so engaging to watch and their narrative of the strength of their family bond. A great standalone Marvel film!

Wicked: For Good

Now demonized as the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba lives in exile in the Ozian forest, while Glinda resides at the palace in Emerald City, reveling in the perks of fame and popularity. As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, she’ll need to reunite with Glinda to transform herself, and all of Oz, for good.

What an amazing sequel! As a longtime fan of the Broadway musical, this adaptation covers its source material well, while also adding in some new elements to the story. The second half of the story takes on a more serious tone which leads to a emotional rollercoaster of feelings during the viewing experience. This film had me in tears by end and while the credits were still rolling. I think the story is also a great allegory for some of the things that are happening in today’s society. Erivo and Grande stole the show again as they put so much into portraying Elphaba and Glinda’s stories.
