Skull/Skeleton/Bones

In this novel, Ophelia must survive dangerous magical trials in a haunted house competition, which functions like a high-stakes game, with the help of a mysterious phantom named Blackwell. I actually enjoyed this Dark Romance novel more than I thought. Creepy from the cover art to the story itself.
Pumpkin

I love Halloween and I love a good friends-to-lovers trope which makes this graphic novel the perfect read for Autumn. The vivid and colorful illustrations by Hicks transport the reader to the pumpkin patch and all of the magical wonders it beholds from tasty cider donuts to leisurely hayride. I love how fun the concept of trying to conquer all of the activities at the pumpkin patch while watching their cute romance develop (since their feelings seem to have been there for a while).
Blood

I liked the dark, dim, and post-apocalyptic settings of vampire cities (in which the story is set). The privileged live on the inside, and the strays live in the outskirt ruins as they fight for day-to-day survival. Not only do the characters in this story have to worry about vamps, but also the super infectious and deadly “rabids”.
Spiders, Bats, or Other Creepy Creatures

This fun horror middle grade novel features five interconnected, spooky stories told by students in Ms. Nomed’s class, culminating in a chilling twist ending. The cover art is so spine-tingling!
Something Witchy

An Amateur Witch’s Guide to Murder is a fitting read for Spooky Season! There are bone-chilling creatures, a possible murder mystery to solve, and an unrelenting curse that reeks havoc. It’s got the right amount of spookiness balanced out with lots of dark humor to make it more of a light-hearted read.
Severed Body Part

What a fantastic, spooky, and unsettling horror novel. Douglass does a fantastic job of creative an mysterious ambiance adding the smallest details to enhance the horror aspects of this novel. If this novel was a movie I would be on the edge of my seat from the imagery of bloody wraiths, ominous mists rising from the ground and haunting nightmares Jake experiences. I think this horror novel was a great blend of supernatural but also a good social commentary on race, bullying, and gun violence.
Full Moon

This is a wonderful graphic novel that is a coming-of-age story about Artie, who is trying to navigate her newfound wolf heritage. I loved the autumnal setting used for the story and the darker color tones used to reflect the supernatural aspects of the plot in the artwork. All the illustrations are so vivid, and I loved the character designs. This is the first graphic novel I’ve read that focuses on Black werewolves and the novel includes a cute Sapphic romance too.
Cemetery

A spooky thriller that keeps the reader engaged throughout the story! This novel is a great blend of mystery and the paranormal. Being that the narrator has amnesia she is trying to piece together the puzzles of her life while also grappling with the fact she can see the undead. All of the what-ifs surrounding the main character kept me wanting to learn the secret mystery.
Haunted House

If gothic horror is more up your alley, then The Hacienda is the novel for you! It provides for a highly immersive reading experience that sends chills down your spine. The house itself is the best “character” in this novel and through Cañas’s writing it stuck with me long after reading the book (its absolutely terrifying!) I enjoyed that the story was a good blend of horror, romance, and suspense while tacking multiple themes throughout its narrative.
Ghost

Hungry Bones is a ghost story that is full of heart and an equally spooky reading experience. What I loved about this novel is how charming the overall story is while also educating its audience about an overlooked part of Chinese American history. The lighthearted and funny moments are balance out the horror elements well.
Classic Monster (Vampire, Werewolf, Mummy, Frankenstein’s Monster, Etc.)

Most paranormal stories focus on the cool aspects of vampires; superhuman strength and otherworldly powers. This story focuses on vampire’s dangerous instincts while also showing it how incredibly lonely it is to lose everything you love while time seems never ending for them.
Candy

I couldn’t find a book for this prompt!
Someone in a Costume or Mask

Though this novel features things that go bump in the night it is more spooky fun than outright horror. The story captures the spirit of the season and other things most people enjoy about Halloween. There are eerie decorations, Autumnal treats, getting dressed up in a creative costume, and the overall feeling of having fun.
Orange and Black

From tales of demonic blues player from Georgia to alien abductions, this collection offers a variety of types of stories from the weird sci-fi to downright horror, the collection varies in the intensity of terror and pulls from history, conspiracy theories, folktales, and more. No two tales are the same and each one offers something different. Many stories open up a larger discussion about race relations, the Civil Rights Movement, and ancestry just to name a few.
Something Creepy

I love a good historical fiction and Berry does not disappoint readers in If Looks Could Kill mixing the genre with unique fantasy and mythology elements. Based on real events, the novel is grounded late 1800s New York taking readers through the streets of the city that never sleeps. Love the creepy cover art.
