Cozy Viewing: 5 Shows to Enjoy During Autumn
I love watching TV, especially cozy or thrilling ones that fit the brisk temps of the Autumn season. I’ve seen so many over the years, but here are some picks of shows that I’ve enjoyed and recommend for anyone looking to add to their seasonal watchlist.
Ghosts
Samantha, a cheerful freelance journalist, and Jay, an up-and-coming chef from the city, throw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge run-down country estate they inherited into a bed and breakfast — only to find it’s inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents.
It’s a cozy, comedic, and heartwarming show with strong writing and an excellent cast that keeps you entertained. The episodic nature of each episode’s plot makes for easy, softly spooky viewing during Halloween season and all year long. The Characters and the actors portraying the Ghosts are the main draw and how they make them so relatable to its viewing audience. I highly recommend it!
Young Dracula
Single dad Count Dracula moves to modern-day Britain from Transylvania with his two children, Vlad and Ingrid. To his father’s horror, Vlad – the show’s eponymous hero – wants not to bite, but rather to fit in with his new-found British friends, but it’s not easy when you are one of the undead.
This BBC Show isactually based on a children’s book series (which I’m unfamiliar with) and it’s a entertaining watch for all ages. I like the twist of Dracula wanting to be a human and the lengths he’ll go to try not to be like a vampire. It’s also funny to watch the vampire’s nemesis Van Helsing come up with all kinds of schemes to get rid of Dracula’s family. It’s a very funny show and a recommended watch if you like TV that’s lighthearted.
The Munsters
The family at 1313 Mockingbird Lane is a little… different. Dad Herman looks like Frankenstein’s monster; mom Lily and her dad, Grandpa, are vampires; and son Eddie is a werewolf. Poor Marilyn, their niece, is the odd one out — she’s just a normal girl. And the family doesn’t like to call attention to her unfortunate looks.
My mom introduced me to The Munsters when I was kid and we’ve been watching it together ever since! Even though I have re-watched all the episodes (too many times to count) there is something about the characters’ charm that makes me a repeat viewer. The family considered themselves entirely normal while everyone else is different. The make look like classic movie monsters, but instead are a loving, goofy, and tight-knit family that makes me laugh every episode.
What We Do In The Shadows
“What We Do in the Shadows” is a documentary-style look into the daily (or rather, nightly) lives of four vampires who’ve “lived” together for hundreds of years in Staten Island. The series follows the lives of three traditional vampires, Nandor, Laszlo, and Nadja; Colin Robinson, an energy vampire; and Guillermo, Nandor’s familiar. The series revolves around the centuries-old vampires interacting with the modern world and other supernatural beings.
I love the mockumentary style of the show which is carried over from the original movie it’s based on. The writing is so good and the comedy is golden. Each episode has made me laugh out loud numerous times and the characters are so entertaining. The fact that there is even an energy vampire is hilarious as I feel it’s relatable to something everyone has experienced at one time or another in their lives. This is a must-watch comedy!
Superstore
An oddball family of employees at supersized megastore Cloud 9 tackles the day-to-day grind of rabid bargain hunters, riot-causing sales and nap-worthy training sessions. Stalwart employee Amy is just trying to hold it all together despite the best efforts of her daftly clueless manager Glen and his iron-fisted assistant Dina. Rounding out the crew is new hire Jonah, a dreamy dreamer, sardonic Garrett, ambitious Mateo and sweet young mother-to-be Cheyenne. From bright-eyed newbies to seen-it-all veterans, bumbling seasonal hires and in-it-for-life managers, they’re all going to get through another day — together.
Being that I’ve worked in retail on and off for some years, I could really relate to a lot of the people that work at Cloud 9 and some of the customer interactions that they have on a daily basis. This show is so funny not only because of the amazing writing, but the cast of characters (and the actors that play them). It’s hard to explain why I love this show so much, so you have to watch it for yourself. Just know that it will have you laughing constantly.
